Obscurations (To Feast On The Seraphim)

Band:RITUAL CHAMBER
Album:Obscurations (To Feast On The Seraphim)
Label:Profound Lore
Format:CD
Genre:Death Metal

Bay Area based death metal monstrosity RITUAL CHAMBER is commanded solely by multi-instrumentalist underground death metal veteran Dario Derna (aka Numinas) who is also the mastermind behind Khrom, and was part of underground cult death metal band Infester (whose only full-length album “To The Depths… In Degradation” is essential death metal listening!), as well as once having spent time in bands such as Drawn & Quartered, Funebrarum, and of course the mighty EVOKEN.

RITUAL CHAMBER sees Derna return to his death metal roots and is a culmination of his 25 years active in the underground. Almost like an extension of his work in Infester combined with the doomy atmosphere of Evoken, RITUAL CHAMBER made its impression in 2013 with its “Pits Of Tentacled Screams” demo which made a huge impression in the underground death metal scene.

With the RITUAL CHAMBER debut album, which was tracked and mixed at San Francisco’s Light Rail Studios (VHOL, Hammers Of Misfortune), “Obscurations…” comes across as a massive, brutal, and ultimately dark sonic monolith of death metal terror that will lay its foundation upon the American death metal scene as one of its new promising pillars.

SENSITIVE SKIN

Band:KIMMO POHJONEN
Album:SENSITIVE SKIN
Label:SVART
Format:Vinyl LP
Genre:world/new age

Svart Records present an exclusive vinyl version of Sensitive Skin, the new album by Kimmo Pohjonen. The CD version is on Octopus, a subsidiary of Ondine Records.

Sensitive Skin follows up the highly successful previous release UNIKO with Kronos Quartet and Samuli Kosminen on Ondine. Sensitive Skin features nine new Pohjonen compositions that explore dynamic new sonic territory with special guests Tuomas Norvio (electronics), Kronos Quartet (string quartet), Samuli Kosminen (drums, percussion), Timo Kämäräinen (guitar, bouzouki), Sami Kuoppamäki (drums), Inka and Saana Pohjonen (vocals), Arto Järvelä (nyckelharpa), Ismo Alanko (vocals), Lauri Porra (bass) and more. Kronos string arrangements by Timo Alakotila. Sensitive Skin was produced and mixed by James Spectrum, known for productions with Finnish bands Von Hertzen Brothers and Pepe Deluxe.

Kimmo: “This is the first album where I had enough time to plan and record at a comfortable pace and in my own studio, allowing the music to emerge more organically and exactly as I wanted. Additionally, the vocal contributions by my daughters Inka and Saana were a big influence on the way the music and album were shaped, created and arranged. I am more than satisfied, even thrilled with the results.”

SON OF EARTH AND SKY

Band:HIGH PRIEST OF SATURN
Album:SON OF EARTH AND SKY
Label:SVART
Format:CD
Genre:Stoner/Doom/Occult/Sludge Metal

In 2013, an unexpected creature fell from the sky and landed in Trondheim, Norway where it took possession of three locals and gathered them under the HIGH PRIEST OF SATURN moniker to chant to the stars and praise the beyond. The trio's self-titled debut was stoner/doom at its gloomiest and most spellbinding, with the echodrenched vocals of Merethe Heggeset battling over layers of sweet Hammond organ and pounding drums, making ACID KING and BLOOD CEREMONY meet somewhere far away in the cosmos. Now, two and a half years later and with a full-on keyboard player in tow and a looser and more vintage prog and psychedelic approach, they’re back with ‘Son of Earth and Sky’, a monster of an album that will prove once and for all that they’ve already exceeded their early stoner/doom tag for something far more organic and less rigid. Recorded and mixed in only five days at Trondheim’s own Brygga Lydstudio in August 2014, like with many of ‘classic rock’ albums the band take inspiration from, those five new songs were mostly performed live in the studio with very little overdubs as the members themselves point out: “the songwriting has been more of a collaborative effort this time, with everybody in the band participating to some extent. This, in addition to recording the tracks live and being able to play off each other and improvise some parts, has given the whole thing a more dynamic feel than the debut". And indeed, while they haven’t lost their taste for the epic with three out of those five songs clocking at over or almost nine minutes, ‘Son of Earth and Sky’ is the vivid snapshot of a band fully revitalized and aiming at something more freer and more connected all those late 60’s and early 70’s artists that serve as inspiration in the first place. Rounded up by a superb and evocative artwork that seems to evoke a forlorn monolith on some forgotten planet, this is the sound of HIGH PRIEST OF SATURN reaching for the stars and arriving at their destination.

GREASEWHEEL

Band:VIRGIN KIDS
Album:GREASEWHEEL
Label:FLUFFER
Format:Vinyl LP
Genre:Garage Punk

Fluffer Records, the cult underground label that brought you Sewer Rats and Love Buzzard and the label that re-invented the live music scene through Pit Parties (Slaves/ Cerebral Ballzy/ Heck/ God Damn), announce their newest signing, Virgin Kids.

Originally started as the bedroom project of frontman Asher Preston, Virgin Kids were fully formed in late 2014 with the addition of childhood friend Paul Rosser and ex-Fawn Spots drummer Sean Hughes. They deliver frenetically energised rock‘n’roll that draws from sources such as post-punk and the ‘70s West Coast (think Gun Club, FIDLAR, The Black Lips).

DIY magazine says “Virgin Kids share the same grime-under-fingernails, downright grubby mentality as fellow garage punks The Black Lips and Hinds. But with new song ‘Cracks in a Colour’, they form a gnarly manifesto of their own”

Joint release with Burger Records (US).

Limited Edition 12’ vinyl (includes download codes). Exclusive limited edition bonus download track with vinyl purchase.
