Along with the now defunct Asunder, Portland, Oregon’s ALDEBARAN have always been considered to be the West Coast’s most prominent funeral/death/doom metal band. The DVD of The Golem with the full score of the film written, performed and recorded by Black Francis. Often regarded as the height of German expressionism, the silent, black and white film The Golem was the last of a series of three films by director Paul Wegener and was released in 1920. Set in the 16th century, The Golem: How He Came Into The World tells the story of the persecution of the Jews of Prague. The highly expressionistic imagery seen in the film was captured by legendary cinematographer Karl Freund, who went on to do the classic Metropolis in 1927. Groundbreaking as it was, the film sat 'silent' for nearly 88 years until the San Francisco International Film Festival requested Black Francis score the film and perform it live for their annual film festival in April 2008.

Repress of THE MEN's self-released album originally limited to 500 copies. 8 songs of desperate, fuzzed out, riff laden punk/post-punk. GERM is the new solo project of Tim (Austere, Grey Waters, ex-Nazxul) and is everything fans of an emotive style of heavy music could have hoped for ! Germ was conceived by Tim as early as 2003. The idea behind Germ was to create something that not only combined the Atmospheric Black Metal and Rock, Tim has become known for with his love of Classical, Pop and Electronic styles of music, but to create an image and visual aspect to accompany the music. In 2006 a three song EP was recorded, but never released. One track from the EP, „Raving Mad With Sadness“, was uploaded to Myspace, and to this day gains considerable praise. This early song shows glimpses of what was to come, featuring an extended electronic breakdown and clean vocals mixed with Tims hellish shrieks. After this song appeared, things again fell silent. After almost 3 years of inactivity, where the focus was on other projects, Tim entered SLS studios in October 2009 to begin tracking for what was to become the debut full length Germ album. However, not long after, Tim was again focussing on other projects, this time composing Pop songs for various Major labels and producers, as well as working as a session drummer for various bands. Completion of the debut Germ album would have to wait. As of February 2011 Tim resumed work on the album, this time with the determination to see it through til the end. Tim`s continuing work as a composer and session musician have meant at times the progress has been slow, but finally the debut Germ album, „Wish“ is complete in the somber month of september 2011 and will see a release through Eisenwald in 2012.

ESSENZ is a purposeful sonic ether, a decomposition of the physical that transcends the mind through floating acoustic elements. ESSENZ is the invocation of metamorphosis, a stimulation of remote realms of the psyche that dwells on the borders of musical extremes and opens the gate to a deeper leve. ESSENZ play Occult Metal. The concept of “Mundus Numen” is based on the painful acquisition of one's deepest will, which enables to transform the wolrd from an instance to a suggestible setting and implies a manic borderline experience.

Dream Seeds is the third full-length album by Brooklyn art-rock provocateurs Extra Life. Since 2008 Extra Life has challenged and seduced various underground scenes by fusing the obsessive intricacy of minimalist composition, the suicidal swoon of Morrissey, the epic strength of Metal and the solemn purity of Medieval chant. With a pedigree including Zs, Dirty Projectors and Dax Riggs, the band’s dark, dramatic sound, labeled by some as “Plague Pop”, has been called everything from “genius” to “pretentious” to “religious”.

’Then Came the After’ was recorded throughout 2010 and 2011 at Liophant Studios with Alexis Gideon and in Mike Coykendall’s Studio, both in Portland, Oregon. The songs reflect the emotions of the album title: the unknown, change, happiness and sadness of human relationships and the mystery of life. ‘Then Came the After’ was written and recorded with a fuller, brighter, and more live sound in mind than the previous album, ‘A Cave, A Canoo’. Though both albums share a depth of spirit, Shelley’s musician friends Rachel Blumberg, Nate Query, Mike Coykendall and Alexis Gideon helped bring a positive vibe to the new sound. The more complex sound of ‘Then Came the After’ experiments further with new genres and soundscapes. In songs such as “Plane” inspired by the melodic and meditative sounds of Pharaoh Sanders and Melanie, you can hear how the harp and piano of Alexis Gideon (Video Musics, White Hinterlands), upright bass of Nate Query (The Decemberists, Black Prairie) and drums of Rachel Blumberg (M Ward, The Decemberists) complete the ethereal yet grounded visual effects of the repetitive guitar and vocals, floating the song into the clouds to be carried by these talented musicians. Shelley was inspired for the sound of ‘Then Came the After’ by the work of Roger Miller, Loudon Wainwright 3rd, Roberta Flack, Melanie, Iris Murdoch, Joan Didion, Ron Davies, Jake Thackray, Kris Kristofferson, Nina Rota, Carson McCullers and Pharaoh Sanders.

Joy as A Toy is back with a new opus full of un-nice sentiments. Dead As A Dodo immortalizes this pretty crazy project presented during 29th Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival. Joy As A Toy took the opportunity to use analogical synthetizers and samplers in order to play a repertoire which was freely inspired by 70's horror movies soundtracks. The album sounds as if it were the ideal soundtrack for an hallucinated nightmare, a psychedelic and angular trip as well as a snoring and stumbling B movie. In a few words, it is venomous, funny, grating and implacable.

I love this record. For me, it has a trace or two of Arthur Lee and Love at their best (‘Krishna Dov’ would not sound out of place on “Forever Changes,” for example), with dashes of maybe Terry Callier in some of the jazzier tunes. I also like that Hollins & Starr wrote a gentle tribute to one of my favorite old-time bluesmen, Mississippi John Hurt. At times this album is a gorgeous, ethereal blend of psychedelic folk and offbeat pop; but there are some funk and avant-garde moves too (where did those crazy orchestrations, wild guitar, and breakbeats on the fierce anti-war rave-up ‘Hard Headed Woman’ come from?), all supported by an odd assortment of instruments, including flute, bells and a generous helping of fuzz guitar. Chicago-based duo Chuck Hollins and David Starr only made this one album, which originally appeared in 1970 on the Ovation label. All we know about them is what the original ads for the album said: “David Starr learned piano when he was three, began composing when he was four. At twenty-one he was playing flute with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Chuck Hollins picked up a guitar one day and just started playing.... by the time he left Northwestern with his Creative Writing degree he was turning his poetry into music.” Others have said: “Unique blend… with a lovely dreaming, drifting vibe” – Acid Archives; “Many diverse influences from pop-psych, mystical mellow passages, quasi-classical touches, delightful ethereal flute, trance-like vocals and fuzz guitar… there is much to appreciate on this largely undiscovered gem” –Fuzz, Acid & Flowers. Our deluxe mini-LP sleeve CD edition has four bonus tracks, including a “hidden track” with some rare sound effects plucked from the vaults. The CD version is limited to 1,000 copies.So, we state that the sole album by Chuck Hollins and Dave Starr, their only known recordings, is a treasure trove of strong melodies and dreamy vocal stylings—an album sure to appeal to fans of acid folk, popsike, and even those who like jazzy funk. Listening to it is a rich, rewarding experience. This is a perfectly produced and arranged record, an ode to the free mind, structured by intelligent considerations. And as another person has said, “No wonder it has been sampled by DJ Shadow.” Ovation said at the time of its release, “Classical artistry rock and sidewalk poetry.” All true. Very cool. Hip, mellow, and stoned.

There’s no way to know why CBS Records unceremoniously dumped Rotomagus and the Chico Magnetic Band after one single apiece; suffice to say that decision was a poor one, as both bands have (quite rightly) developed a cult-like following over the years. All in all, the artistic trajectory of Rotomagus was peculiar: they started out as a harmony pop-psych band, shifted through a brief Jimi Hendrix-ian interlude (‘The Sky Turns Red’), straight into a Vanilla Fudge groove; they then went down in flames as a hair-raising monolithic heavy rock power trio. On Julian Cope’s excellent Head Heritage web-site, the Seth Man raves about Rotomagus thus: “The first time I heard this track (‘Fighting Cock’), I did not freak out. I merely walked into a nearby closet and screamed my head off for a minute solid, beat the floor and ripped my t-shirt... then I cowered when it hit me: this thing came out in 1971? Before “Raw Power”?! I just lost my mind... The only thing that predates this monster in terms of being a full-on amassing of all things heavy are all the many key points on Sir Lord Baltimore’s “Kingdom Come” LP and THAT’S it, brother.” French magazine Rock & Folk was succinct: “Rotomagus create an emotional music, violent, even aggressive.” Violent. Aggressive. Intense. On this disc we bring you the entire output of Rotomagus, including an album-length demo from 1971, the band’s tumultuous, thunderous swansong, recorded as a super jam (live with no overdubs). Our Lion Productions and Martyrs of Pop edition of Rotomagus comes replete with a bi-lingual 32-page booklet, with the entirety of the Seth Man’s article on the band, plus the band’s history in both English and French, printed on FSC recycled, chlorine-free, 100% post-consumer fiber paper, manufactured using biogas energy. Hard to believe this is all pre-1971, as much of the demo is not just proto punk but proto hardcore—with enough fiery attitude to make you want to scream along. The vocals are wild, while the guitar riffs and grinds and approaches a Stooges via Motorhead apocalyptic grandeur. - Amazing!

Aidan Baker is a classically trained Canadian multi-instrumentalist currently based in Berlin. Recognized for both his solo work as well as doom / drone duo Nadja, he has already released a great number of records, also in collaboration with other musicians from all over the world (his projects include ARC, Infinite Light Ltd., Whisper Room, Adoran). With his newest solo album, enigmatically entitled “Closure Axioms”, released on a newly-established Polish label The Miskatonic SoundLab, Aidan presents nine spatial tracks, gently crafted with an instrument he is undoubtedly best at – solo electric guitar. Only with such an austere tool was he able to deliver so mesmerizing tunes, he is most appreciated for.

Let The Prophet Speak is a 12” limited edition LP of remixes by the Gloom Prophet from Grand Duchy’s new album Let The People Speak, due out April 10. Gloom Prophet, a self-proclaimed ‘sound designer’, specializes in rich textures and soundscapes laid atop groove-laden, post-dubstep beats. Although tracks from Let The People Speak were remixed by a handful of artists all over the world, the Gloom Prophet’s remixes have taken these tracks out of this world and back. The familiar voices of Violet Clark and Frank Black, along with his signature howling telecaster riffs have been remixed and warped into another universe.An absolute must for any fan of Grand Duchy, Frank Black or experimental electronic and dubstep.

A longstanding member of the Santana band, Bill Ortiz is proud to present his new solo EP release Winter In America from his forthcoming album, Highest Wish. A follow up to his debut solo album From Where I Stand, the new project features conscious emcees such as The Grouch, Zumbi (of Zion I) and K-Maxx, as well as fellow Santana member (and 11 time Grammy® Award Winner) Tony Lindsey, and iconic poet/vocalist Linda Tillery, featured with a spoken word performance of Dr. Martin Luther King's Nobel Peace Prize speech. Ortiz covers Gil Scott Heron’s 1973 hit on the title track “Winter in America” as an homage to the recently departed Heron. And while Ortiz is known over the past 11 years as the trumpeter with Santana, he’s been involved in the Hip-Hop and R&B movements for as long as he’s played music. This is the result of a collaboration between Transubstans Records, Russian act VESPERO and German act ZONE SIX. The first three tracks of this record consists of the atmospheric soundscapes of psychedelic space rockers VESPERO; a band that combines playfulness and joy with futuristic heavy rhythms. The great recordings of their works has helped capture their essence; a tight, thick wall of sound, allowing them to give synthesizers the space they need in songs like this. ZONE SIX is a band built up by members from the more outstanding psychedelic space rock scene in Germany. Some of the keys in the band is Dave Schmidt (ELECTRIC MOON, SULA BASSANA) on the drums and Komet Lulu (ELECTRIC MOON) on bass and effects. Komet Lulu is also the mastermind behind the cover of this record. Combining different members from some of the best bands in Germany today (ELECTRIC MOON, THE PANCAKES, VIBRAVOID), ZONE SIX manages to create an extremely atmospheric sound that will explode deep down in your veins. Their featured track on "The Split Thing" is called "Babapapatantramanta" and provides the same hypnotizing emotions like the HAWKWIND albums of the early 70's did.
