AOKIGAHARA

Band:FLOWERS FOR BODYSNATCHERS
Album:AOKIGAHARA
Label:Cryo Chamber
Format:CD
Genre:NEO CLASSICAL

2015 REPRESS NOW BACK IN PRINT- Aokigahara, known as the Suicide Forest is a 35-square-kilometre forest that lies at the northwest base of Mount Fuji in Japan. Aokigahara forest is dense, shutting out all but the natural sounds of the forest itself. The forest has an historic association with demons in Japanese mythology, and it is a notoriously common suicide site. Duncan Ritchie explores the long journey to Aokigahara through soundscapes ripe with lonely pianos on textural backdrops. Duncan spent countless hours field recording on the voyage between Tokyo to Aokigahara which creates the perfect atmospheric companion to the intricate instrumental approach. This is a beautiful dark ambient soundtrack culminating in the final choice between life and death. Selling Points: Flowers for Bodysnatchers is Duncan Ritchies project, former member of the Japanese act The Rosenshoul Track Listing: 1. Prisoner of Night and Fog 04:32 2. MERCEDES KOLO

Band:Dobranotch
Album:MERCEDES KOLO
Label:CPL MUSIC
Format:CD
Genre:FOLK/KLEZMER RUSSIA

"Dobranotch" was set up in 1998 in France where a company of friends musicians from St.Petersburg, Russia was driven by wanderlust and the love of fresh musical experiences. After some years of travels the band came back to St. Petersburg to get a new lineup and new sound. "Dobranotch" performs Jewish, Gypsy and Balkan traditional music, drawing on deep knowledge of traditions, rich experience in traveling and interacting with traditional musicians from different countries. The band's repertoire also includes Russian songs of the golden age of brass bands. Throughout its existence "Dobranotch" has toured across more than twenty countries of the world and recorded seven albums. One can hear the band's music in TV series, feature films and documentaries. The band "Dobranotch" sounds equally convincing on philharmonic stages and in clubs and on open air festivals. It is not uncommon that the musicians of the band come down off the stage to play right among the audience, as their predecessors did at weddings a hundred years ago.

ASSU

Band:ASSU
Album:ASSU
Label:NORDIC NOTES
Format:CD
Genre:FOLK/SAMI/FINLAND

Áššu base their music on traditional Sami Joik. Ulla Pirttijärvi joiks of her relatives and her home villages Utsjoki and Angeli. Olav Torget and Harald Skullerud complement the ensemble with string instruments and percussions. The ensemble draw further inspiration from West African grooves and tradition. They vary their expression from wide atmospheres and quiet moods all they way to more uptempo grooves. The world music scene has long enjoyed their music especially around African and Arabic tradition. This has influenced the instrument choices and unique sound of the new album Áššu (Embers). With this album I’ve wanted to present my relatives’ joiks and the joiks of those persons who have had an influence on my life. These joiks are part of my family identity. They are traditional joiks from my home village of Angeli and Utsjoki, where I now live. There are also Sámi villages’ joiks and joiks that are related to the Sámi view of the world. The pieces gives a modern context to the traditional joik, and express and support in a plain and acoustic style the feelings and stories of the joiks.

PAUANNE

Band:PAUANNE
Album:PAUANNE
Label:NORDIC NOTES
Format:CD
Genre:FOLK FINLAND

Pagan sounds from the depths of the Finnish forests!
Pauanne rediscover the long-lost non-Christian tradition of Finnish folk music. The trio, fronted by Kukka Lehto, has searched through Helsinki’s music archives and unearthed exciting material from the early 20th century – a rich treasure of ideas! Their repertoire includes powerful curses as well as longforgotten shepherd’s songs. In the eyes of the institutional Church, this folk music tradition is full of sin. After all, it doesn’t even shy away from making fun of the vicar’s boring sermon. Pauanne’s self-titled debut album is full of surprises; these tunes are rough around the edges and full of disrespect and have little in common with a more familiar nostalgic and jovial type of folk music. Kukka Lehto (violin, keyboards) and Tero Pennanen (keyboards) are in charge of composition and arrangements. The experienced trio surprises with occasional glimpses of progressive rock, such as in the beautiful “Susiraja”. Janne Haavisto on drums and percussion provides the rhythmic backbone to the music. The historical material used in these songs was collected by Kukka Lehto and Tero Pennanen. But Pauanne do not live in the past: The gentle “Rauta” bears some resemblance to Gotan Project’s lounge style and tracks like “Siihen Laihin Eläny” are somewhat reminiscent of Martyn Bennett, a Canadian- Scottish musician who brought traditional Celtic music into the here and now. The accompanying video is about a historical witch trial in 17th century Finland.

AFTERNOON SASS

Band:BURNING ALMS
Album:AFTERNOON SASS
Label:GEENGER
Format:LP
Genre:POST PUNK/PUNK ROCK/INDIE ROCK

It’s 2019 and the planet is a mess. But back with a lightning flash and new tracks are the three enigmatic individuals collectively known as Burning Alms — Thomas Whitfield, Sebastian Lenton and John Biggs, formerly of Calories and Distophia, with 'Afternoon Sass'. Captured during a bleak English winter by recording engineer and long-term collaborator Tom Livemore, the resulting album fuses punk noise and lo-fi pop with ornate jazz flourishes, garnished with the occasional Derek Bailey-esque skronk. 'Afternoon Sass' is being released in Europe by Croatian label Geenger Records. Reminiscent of the likes of Superchunk, Sebadoh and Jim O'Rourke, the record is made up of nine songs including imminent single releases 'Every City' and 'Everyone You Know'. The album is a follow up to their previous recording, 'In Sequence'.
