RANONKEL

Band:MACHINEFABRIEK
Album:RANONKEL
Label:BURNING WORLD
Format:LP
Genre:AMBIENT DRONE

Special vinyl release of the third Burning World Records release in 2008 after Gnaw Their Tongues and a vinyl version of Marijn by Machinefabriek. At the time it was only released on CD. Some of the material of Ranonkel (besides new Machinefabriek-material) was used by Swiss filmmaker Rene Gardi for his movie African Mirror. Specially mastered for vinyl by James Plotkin (Bell Witch, Godflesh) in 2019. The press at the time about Ranonkel: Vital weekly: Using guitar, effects, vinyl and laptop, Rutger Zuydervelt creates highly atmos-pheric pieces of music, like he always does. His previous effort, the soundtracks to films for the Rotterdam Film Festival wasn't so much of my liking but on 'Ranonkel' he more than makes up. These are strong pieces again, varied in approach, although all centered around the notion of dark atmospheric music, each of them has their own approach. aQuarius: The sound of Machinefabriek seems to be moving in a much more melodic direc-tion, not that there wasn't always plenty of melody, but these latest forays into soundmaking sound less purposefully experimental, less abstract, and more songlike, more melodic, the opener is downright lovely, and sounds like it could be Godspeed or some Godspeed spawned outfit, a luxurious slow burn, and deep warm chords and glistening sprinkles of high end over the top, haunting and ominous and cinematic, might just be the best track we've heard from Machinefabriek. But heck, the rest of the disc is some pretty great shakes too.

Label:Sunbeam
Format:CD

'Sympathy for the Beast', the new album by Twink and the Technicolour Dream, is based on the wonderfully imaginative poetical works of Aleister Crowley, whose natural and intrinsic musical quality Twink and the Technicolour Dream have tried to intensify with their psychedelic musical drive, using sections of the original poems as lyrics for their songs or narrations for their musical backgrounds. Jon Povey has given a significant contribution to this album as vocalist, composer and keyboard player. In addition, William Breeze, head of the Ordo Templi Orientis, the lodge presided by Crowley through most of his life, has provided the recently discovered manuscript scores of two unpublished songs by Crowley that Twink and the Technicolour Dream are presenting for the first time in their original form (piano + soprano) and a rock version. CUACHA

Band:SIDEWINDERS
Album:CUACHA
Label:LION RECORDS
Format:LP
Genre:Alt Rock

"By the time they recorded Cuacha!, the Sidewinders had almost figured out what kind of band they wanted to be. On some cuts here the Hüsker Dü-goes-West mix of acoustic textures and roaring guitar is almost perfect. 'I Guess It Doesn't Matter' and 'Blood on Our Hands' are punk-pop masterpieces driven by Rich Hopkins' snarling guitars and Dave Slutes' country-inflected but brash singing... The album is worth having for the first released version of 'What She Said,' a song that the band released on three different albums, each time rocking a bit harder and at greater length. The version here is a dark, mournful folk-rock piece." -AllMusic "More than one observer of the Arizona rock scene has noted that had the Sidewinders not been derailed by legal and label problems, the Tucson quartet might've beaten neighboring Tempe's Gin Blossoms to the brass ring. Or maybe it was just a case of the too-good/too-early American band syndrome in the conservative pre-Nirvana era. Formed around the songwriting core of guitarist Richard Hopkins and vocalist David Slutes, the Sidewinders quickly garnered local acclaim and recorded "Cuacha!" for Hopkins' own San Jacinto label. The album has it's share of jangly folk-rock moments instantly familiar to any fan of mid-'80s R.E.M. Yet it's traditional feel-part psychedelic pop and part dustbowl blues-suggests influences stretching back at least two decades." -Trouser Press Take a look at a quick list of "Best Albums" from 1987 and you quickly get a sense of the musical mood of the year: the Joshua Tree by U2; Appetite For Destruction by Guns N' Roses; Sign 'O' The Times by Prince; You're Living All Over Me by Dinosaur Jr.; Document by R.E.M.; Sister by Sonic Youth; Darklands by The Jesus And Mary Chain; Diesel And Dust by Midnight Oil; Come On Pilgrim by Pixies; and Pleased To Meet Me by The Replacements. It's not a stretch at all to plunk the Sidewinders "Cuacha" right amongst those records-both in terms of quality and "sound." The Sidewinders formed in the spring of 1985. The group released "Cuacha!" in 1987 (and again in 1988), and subsequently signed to RCA/Mammoth Records, with whom they released two full-length albums, 1989's "Witchdoctor" and 1990's "Auntie Ramos' Pool Hall." "Witchdoctor" cracked the lower echelons of the Billboard 200 on the strength of two rock radio hits. The band scored exposure on MTV and VH1 and embarked on a worldwide tour. But the Sidewinders were soon sidelined due to legal problems stemming from a challenge over the band's name. As the Sand Rubies, they released an album on Polydor/Atlas in 1993 (at one point, Pearl Jam served as their opening act). However, the strain of the legal tussle led the Sand Rubies to dissolve during a tour in 1993-just as two other Arizona rock bands, Gin Blossoms and The Refreshments, attracted mainstream attention.

SIMEON BROWN/BELLADONNA

Band:GREEN SEAGULL
Album:SIMEON BROWN/BELLADONNA
Label:MEGA DODO
Format:7
Genre:ROCK/PSYCH/POP

Taking their name from a mis‐heard Rolling Stones lyric, Green Seagull are the latest band to burst out of London's burgeoning neo‐psych scene. The band formed in 2016 when Paul Nelson (New Electric Ride) approached Paul Milne (Hidden Masters / Magnetic Mind) to work on some songs together. A shared enthusiasm for late‐60s baroque psychedelia and 12‐string jangle soon blossomed into a prolific songwriting team. Their debut album, Scarlet Fever, was released last year to critical acclaim. Now the band returns with a new single. ‘Simeon Brown’ is adorned with a radiantly cheery bandstand blossoming that’s charmed with a ‘Magical Mystery Tour’ era McCartney‐esque artistry dovetailed with a Kinks meets Tomorrow vibe”. ‘Belladonna’ has a festooning of fuzz stoked grooviness immediately drawn of a love for the Zombies, swirling keys kissed with a shades adorned authentic 60’s beat pop savvy which not for the first time during this evenings listening thus far, has sided a kinship with the Wicked Whispers with a tracing hint of a younger Hanging Stars.

UNPLUGGED AT GALERIE FLENSBURG 1981

Band:TONY SHERIDAN
Album:UNPLUGGED AT GALERIE FLENSBURG 1981
Label:SIREENA
Format:2CD
Genre:ROCK N ROLL/FOLK/BLUES

Tony Sheridan was an artist with almost 6 decades of musical activity, however fate in the same breath acknowledged him more so through his association with more prominent musicians. This was sadly still the case at the time of his death on February 16th, 2013, in Hamburg, Germany. The 'New York Times' obituary put the headline Tony Sheridan, Colleague of Beatles, Is Dead at 72 , in death he was still regarded as a side man not a major performer. In his early years Tony Sheridan indeed had served as a background or session musician for the Beatles and certainly the Beatles intern had provided instrumentation on some of Sheridan s early and most well-known recording sessions. The book 'The Hamburg Sound' characterizes Tony Sheridan as an "unusual guitarist and singer known for doing the unexpected". Furthermore soon after his arrival in Hamburg from England, Tony Sheridan was considered the King of St. Pauli (which was the music quarter of Hamburg). People attending his shows expected him in the 1960s to sing 'My Bonnie', 'Skinny Minnie' and many other rock 'n' roll hits, naturally Sheridan sang these numbers and the crowds were very well served and satisfied by his repertoire. Most certainly this was the music by which he had become known in Germany. When Tony Sheridan faded from the spotlight, theatres and television, he did not fully disappear like countless stars who had experienced their "15 minutes of fame" through involvement with music. Tony Sheridan still toured, he was constantly on the road, he travelled from near, Hamburg to Munich, and he travelled far, Australia to Vietnam. His fame over the years has been based upon the legacy of the 'Beat Brothers' band show and the song 'My Bonnie'. However Sheridan s interest was more deeply tuned towards blues and folk music. It goes without saying that he did not want only to perform his repertoire from the sixties some decades later, he wanted to push his musical boundaries. The change in style musically found on these discs has an emphasis solely on 'Tony Sheridan and his Guitar'. The recordings are taken from his solo unplugged show in 1981 when he appeared in the renowned Galerie, Flensburg a popular Germany music pub, this was years before performing ' unplugged became the fashion. This double CD allows you to hear different and enthralling sides of this evening, and gain an insight into the musical world of Tony Sheridan. THE UNIVERSE BY EAR

Band:UNIVERSE BY EAR, THE
Album:THE UNIVERSE BY EAR
Label:SIREENA
Format:CD
Genre:ROCK/PROGRESSIVE/PSYCH

"It could have started with a knock on the door, a letter on the table or some blood on the floor" – That’s the opening line of the second self-titled album from The Universe By Ear. And indeed: There is an endless array of ways to open an album, that follows up upon a critically appraised debut (2017). The Universe By Ear chose a hidden escape route and start off with a psychedelia-fuled garage-rocker: “Been Here Before” of course is a misleading title for that opener, since the powertrio ventures into newland. But of course The Universe By Ear also remain true to what they do best, which is the instrumental freefall through des musical cosmos they call psychedelic brain blues. But since a conscious and constant trespassing can in itself be limiting, Grünenfelder, Bürgin and Strittmatter dish out a poppy hook ("Temperamental Apathy") a badass shouter ("Bad Boy Boogie) and a two faced cinematic Wild-West-Soundtrack ("Sand And Dust). It goes without saying that mathematics (“Lessons From An Ordinary World"), grooveriffs ("Euphoria"), some krautrock ("Follow The Echo") and stoner ("Loudest Gorilla in the Cage") also find their spaces. The bands thumbprint – three freewheeling instrumentalists and just as many voices – remains distinctive. In "Where All Sheep Are Black" you will re-encounter a wall of guitars and the superimposed vocals, that also made the debut-album stand out.
