BRIGHT MORNING STARS

Band:DEAD ROCK WEST
Album:BRIGHT MORNING STARS
Label:BURNSIDE
Format:CD
Genre:Alt-Country / Americana

If it's true that where there's dark there's light, and where there's despair there's hope, then you could say Dead Rock West found its shine transforming dark nights into daylight over 11 songs on Bright Morning Stars. “I wanted to get back to the simplicity of life by connecting with the source,” says Cindy Wasserman (Rob Wasserman’s sister) who with Frank Lee Drennen is Dead Rock West. The pair collected the old time spirituals of Blind Willie Johnson, the contemporary gospel of the Staple Singers, and a desperate plea by the Jesus & Mary Chain, plus six more songs of strength and hope, with the help of producer Peter Case. Joining Dead Rock West with the voices of their talented mentors and friends--John Doe, Exene Cervenka and Mark Olson--the result sounds like some of the best hill stomping music you’ll hear west of Texarkana. And yet, “This is a total California spirituals record,” says Drennen. “Made by California musicians.”

Dead Rock West will be playing 10 dates from London to Glasgow in March 2011.

“With producer Peter Case at the helm, who for all intents and purposes is to Wasserman and Drennen what T Bone Burnette is to Krauss and Plant, this collection of eleven well-chosen songs take us on an Americana inspired road trip, the soundtrack of which is peppered with gospel-tinged to bluesy adaptations of familiar songs from the tradition”. - Allan Wilkinson Northern Sky UK

THAT OLD SOUTHERN DRAG

Band:PATRICK SWEANY
Album:THAT OLD SOUTHERN DRAG
Label:BURNSIDE
Format:CD
Genre:Alt-Country / Americana

"That Old Southern Drag is Patrick Sweany's anticipated follow up to the 2007 Dan Auerbach-produced record Every Hour Is A Dollar Gone. Patrick has spent the past three years touring relentlessly both on his own and in support of artists such as The Black Keys, Hot Tuna, Paul Thorn, The Wood Brothers, and Sonny Landreth. On Southern Drag, Sweany wraps his retro blues rock around vintage Southern soul, recalling folks like Eddie Hinton and Solomon Burke, while maintaining his scruffy indie edge.

"His music has a loose, aggresive edge, but in his quiter moments, Sweany recalls the supple beauty of Ry Cooder's 70s readings of Depression-era pop blues." - MOJO (UK) "New Blues Explosion!"

HEART OF A DOG

Band:KASEY ANDERSON
Album:HEART OF A DOG
Label:BURNSIDE
Format:CD
Genre:Alt-Country / Americana

Kasey Anderson's fourth full-length album, Nowhere Nights, earned him widespread praise (Paste, Blurt, No Depression, The Onion AV Club) and comparisons to Steve Earle, Guy Clark, and Townes Van Zandt, but Anderson remained unsatisfied. Feeling boxed-in and determined to shake the ""Roots Rock"" tag, Anderson assembled his band, The Honkies, and recorded Heart of a Dog, a swaggering set of unabashed Rock 'N' Roll. From the sinister opening riff of the opening track, ""The Wrong Light,"" to the barroom piano of the album's plaintive closer, ""For Anyone,"" Anderson and his band shed any prior evidence of ""twang"" and rock, as Anderson says, ""without pretense or apology.

 "A literate, workingman's poet."" - Paste

"Heart of a Dog is an ambitious and well-produced album that represents a solid step forward for Anderson as a musician and band leader and will likely result in some more rousing live shows in 2011" – No Depression

INTO THE DARK UNKNOWN

Band:HOLCOMBE WALLER
Album:INTO THE DARK UNKNOWN
Label:BURNSIDE
Format:CD
Genre:Alt-Country / Americana

Holcombe Waller’s “Into The Dark Unknown” is the fourth release from this Portland based artist. Beyond performing solo and with his chamber folk ensemble, The Healers, Holcombe creates multidisciplinary work that combines video, music, and staging. He collaborates with dance and theater artists and recently composed the music for David Weissman’s film We Were Here, which premiered at The Sundance Film Festival 2011. With a national spring/summer tour in the works, a Huffington Post feature in February and a new video on the homepage of Out Magazine, Waller’s presence will be apparent to those who have been waiting for his latest indie neo-folk rock release.

“He’s got the crazy-beautiful, four-octave voice of an androgynous seraph. Waller renders songs of romantic holocaust with a nakedness that can’t be taught.” – Spin Magazine.

HIGHWAYS GHOSTS HEARTS AND HOMES

Band:SUSAN JAMES
Album:HIGHWAYS GHOSTS HEARTS AND HOMES
Label:BURNSIDE
Format:CD
Genre:Alt-Country / Americana

Susan James' new release, Highways, Ghosts, Hearts and Home, finds her expanding her lyrical and musical reach through her psychedelic, country-folk lens. Tune after tune reveals the unique qualities of James voice, her melodic skills, or her oft-admired knack for turning a phrase. Paul Lacques, Paul Marshall and Shawn Nourse, of I See Hawks In LA, perform on all tracks; Gabe Witcher of Punch Brothers is the fiddle player; and Danny McGough of Shivaree adds Hammond B3. Her 11 original songs were written, recorded and produced as a ""concept"". Highways, Ghosts, Hearts and Home is one powerful, refreshing and sonically pleasing new release from an extremely talented musician.

"James' folk-based songs have caused her to be compared to Joni Mitchell… perhaps most like Mitchell because she is like no one else."" Los Angeles Times

GRAVITY LOVES YOU

Band:KELLEY HUNT
Album:GRAVITY LOVES YOU
Label:BURNSIDE
Format:CD
Genre:Alt-Country / Americana

Acclaimed roots R&B/Americana singer/songwriter/piano player Kelley Hunt's fifth release, Gravity Loves You features 12 new songs including works from Hunt's solo pen and collaborations with writers Caryn Mirriam-Goldberg, Dwight Liles and Sarah Hart. Gravity is another studio tour de force for Hunt, who also co-produced, exploring the theme "make your move, take the leap of faith to follow the life path that is true to you". Gravity winds its way through a palette of roots forms and arrangements that conjure old-school funk to Philly Soul to burning boogie-woogie romps to the intense Gospel-influenced ballad style that is a Kelley Hunt trademark. The project is totally analog, not touched by Pro Tools, and showcases the artist's eminent vocal and keyboard studio performance veritas in a rich, warm aural landscape.

“This Lawrence, Kansas resident seemingly has it all: a brilliant two-fisted piano playing style; a cache of mature self-penned songs ranging in temperament from unrestrained rockers to the most emotive of soul ballads; and, best of all, a flawless R&B vocal technique that would put many a blues 'legend' to shame." All told, this is a marvelous album; miss it at your peril." Blueprint, UK

TRUE INSTIGATOR

Band:FERNANDO
Album:TRUE INSTIGATOR
Label:BURNSIDE
Format:CD
Genre:Alt-Country / Americana

"True Instigator, Fernando's seventh full-length, was recorded in Portland by Adam Selzer (Norfolk and Western, M. Ward). It was mixed by Jeff Stuart Saltzman (Sleater-Kinney, Stephan Malkmus), Luther Russell (Richmond Fontaine), Mike Coykendall (M. Ward, Old Joe Clarks, Richmond Fontaine, She and Him), and Adam Selzer; the first two mixing two songs each, with Coykendall and Selzer jointly mixing the rest of the album. The album is a return to form for Fernando, following 2006's heavily pop-leaning Enter To Exit and 2001's stark, acoustic focus on Dreams of the Sun and Sky. True Instigator offers up straight-ahead rock, alt. country starkness, and haunting melodies.

"An eclectic musician who writes about the same world i live in & sings with just the right amount of abandon... where has he been all my life? - Don Dixon Producer REM, Smithereens Etc

BE ON THE BLUES

Band:PAUL OSCHER
Album:BE ON THE BLUES
Label:BURNSIDE
Format:CD
Genre:Blues

Paul Oscher‘s latest, Bet on the Blues, has already garnered him three nominations from the 2011 Blues Music Awards (WC Handy Awards) for Best Acoustic Album, Best Acoustic Artist and Best Instrumentalist—Harmonica. The album contains fifteen tracks of low-down blues, gospel and jazz from this former Muddy Waters Blues Band member and multiple Blues Music Award winner. Recorded live and in the studio, this work features Paul on vocals, bass harp, neck-racked (diatonic and chromatic) harmonicas, guitar and piano in solo, trio and quartet settings. The title track Bet on the Blues is a great story about Paul meeting Little Walter for the first time and playing three card monte with him (contains explicit language). Oscher ventures out of the blues box to perform a stunning bass harp rendition of the jazz classic Round Midnight. This album is deep roots music played from the heart by a living master of the genre. Special guests include Willie "Big Eyes" Smith and Kid Andersen.

“You can hear Muddy in his guitar, and Otis Spann in the piano, but the overriding sensation is of Oscher at the height of his powers and maturity. This is a man who has spent his life steeped in a blues tradition, and it shows.” Juke Blues (U.K.)
