ABYSSAL are a mysterious death metal trio from the UK (initially began in 2011 as a solo project, then at one point had up to six members in the band) who play death metal in a twisted avant-garde-like manner, encapsulating pure dread and inevitable doom.
Pretty much coming out of nowhere, the band self-released their “Denouement” debut on Jan 02, 2012 which was an album that somewhat went under the radar in the UK underground metal scene, but was an album that showed immense promise to the band’s take on epic, angular unorthodox death metal. Earlier this year, on Jan 01, 2013 the band would ultimately unleash their latest album “Novit enim Dominus qui sunt eius” themselves, exactly a year after their debut to an unsuspecting public. Taking their sound to a much more aesthetically potent realm, ABYSSAL would create an album that captures a true vision of death metal horror. Almost combining the inverted hypnosis of BLUT AUS NORD and filtering it through a death metal paradigm that aligns itself with such death metal elitism akin to MITOCHONDRION, PORTAL, and ANTEDILUVIAN.
Because of this making quite the impression on Profound Lore, the forward-thinking metal label has decided to do an official CD release of “Novit enim Dominus…”

VHÖL initially started out as an idea for guitarist John Cobbett (Hammers Of Misfortune/ex-Ludicra) and drummer Aesop Dekker (Agalloch/Worm Ouroboros/ex-Ludicra) to create music together post-Ludicra. Not something necessarily as a continuation of what Ludicra, but to create something metal-oriented that was faster and that incorporated their musical influences and experiences from ‘80s hardcore, punk, and something that will inevitably be influenced by the likes of such cult bands as Discharge and old-school metal such as classic Judas Priest etc.
When the time came to find a vocalist, without even a second thought, the two immediately thought of Mike Scheidt of YOB and likewise Scheidt, without a second thought, would join to deploy his singular vocal style to music that was inevitably going to be a pretty vast departure from what he does in YOB (Sigrid Sheie of Hammers Of Misfortune/Amber Asylum would round out the lineup on bass).
What VHÖL have created with the debut album is something quite distinct, Scheidt’s unique vocal approach making VHÖL’s sound that much more singular. Something totally different than any of the members other musical involvements, even though their signature styles are all over this, and an album which will have people comparing it to many different reference points all across the board, the VHÖL debut ultimately is a pummeling face melting attack that doesn’t let up for one moment. Don’t think Ludicra part 2, or Ludicra with Mike of YOB on vocals, nor does come close to being anything remotely black metal or doom metal. But instead, a raw and primal offering which creates a feeling of savagery and epic beauty all at once.

Stage1 at Roadburn 2012 was already overcrowded when Conan entered (with their gear through the audience) and laid down an hour of ‚Horseback battle doom‘. ‘The band were in obviously ebullient form, stoked at playing this legendary festival and also being asked to join Sleep in Oslo, as selections from the new and monstrous ‘Monnos’ were intermingled with the huge and bulldozing force of classics like ‘Krull’ and ‘Older Than Earth’. Jon’s instantly likeable faraway vocals have never sounded more realised to these ears, and the audience were massively appreciative of Conan’s true wallop as the Stonehenge of amps that framed the band belched out universe-sized slices of ultra low-end hostility. A special mention too for Paul O’Neil’s expert drumming which represents the kind of versatility and intelligence that one would not usually expect with this most primal of genres, truly adding colour to the palette. By the end of the set I had cunningly worked my way into the centre of the room and believe me I was not regretful of the deoxygenated crush of Stage 01 – Conan had finally arrived on the international stage like the great wrecking ball that they have always been and I needed to be there to witness their special Roadburn moment. After his last world tour with Louis XIV in the Spring of 2009, frontman and producer Jason Hill converted an isolated 100 year old house in the Hollywood Hills into a recording studio named Ulysses. Brimming with instruments and vintage equipment such as tape machines, plate reverbs (and a fireplace), he quickly began writing songs. Late night recording parties ensued, friends started dropping in more frequently and a grand experiment was born. By the winter of 2012 the full album, The Synthetic Love of Emotional Engineering, was finished and a band name was dubbed VICKY CRYER and proved to be a star-studded affair of friends featuring Dominic Howard (drums, Muse), Mark Stoermer (bass, The Killers), Nick Fyffe (bass, Jamiroquai), Dave Elitch (drums, Mars Volta), Jeff Kite (keyboards, Beat Club, Julian Casablancas), Alex Carapetis (drums, NIN, Julian Casablancas) and even an appearance from New York Dolls icon David Johansen.

The Ocean Blue‘s debut record (Sire Records) in 1989 achieved widespread acclaim and radio & MTV airplay. The band of four young high schoolers from Hershey, Pennsylvania went on to release two more well-received records for Sire, the atmospheric Cerulean and alt pop Beneath the Rhythm and Sound, and a fourth record for Mercury/PolyGram, See The Ocean Blue, before leaving the majors in the late 90s. The band had several independent releases in the 2000s and within the last several years began working on a new full length record, their first in over 10 years. That record, Ultramarine, is scheduled for release on Korda Records, a new Minneapolis cooperative label that the band helped launch in late 2012. Ultramarine is a spectacular return to form that recalls the band’s earliest work, and should appeal to fans old and new alike.

So you thought you were safe from TANGORODRIM didn’t you? That the recent, deluxe re-release on vinyl only of their third album (originally released in 2003) was a one-off shot? That you could go back to your safe, PC and Casio-sponsored ‘nice’ black-metal and forget about those ugly punks once and for all? Well, think again. Now fully back on track with a now expanded four-piece line-up and right in the wake of the recent release of an impressive EP through Norway’s APOCALYPTIC EMPIRE (‘Two Iron Rules’), Israel’s most bastard sons are back with a vengeance with this split and two epic tracks, including the 7+ minutes fist-in-the-face-God that is “Unholy From The Hooves To The Horns”.
Fear not, their brother-in-arms from SALUTE aren’t resting on their laurels either though. As a matter of fact, while their earlier material was first and foremost about black dirty n’roll, dope and fucking in the streets, including one great split 7 inches with OCCVLTA last year on DOOMENTIA, those two new songs (plus one bonus track we’ve sworn secrecy about but hush, hush) feel like a bit of departure for the Bristol boys but retain their unmistakable thirst for all things evil. And yes, they would still make Nocturno Culto and Fenriz proud.

Magister Templi is a Norwegian Heavy Metal band, characterized by a strong lyrical imprint inspired by Western mysticism, ritual magic and alchemy. The band was founded in 2008 by singer Abraxas and Guitarist Baphomet, and released a digital demo (Lucifer/Restoration) in 2010. After finally recruiting a full set of five members in the fall of 2011, the band played some concerts in Norway supporting bands such as Fingernails (IT) and Pagan Altar (UK), as well as performing at the Inferno Festival 2012. In June 2012, they self-released their first EP titled “Iao Sabao”, with a concept mainly centered on the ancient Greek Bornless Ritual and the alchemical picture series Splendor Solis; shortly after, they signed a contract with Cruz del Sur Music.
Due to their lyrical content, they have been often associated to the occult/doom metal movement, but “Lucifer, Leviathan Logos” shows that Magister Templi is not a band that follows the actual retro-70s trend, but rather plays genuine, mainly NWOBHM-inspired heavy metal, embedded within the glorious practices of traditional doom metal. As even 1984-Mercyful Fate might be cited as another influence due to the numerous and sudden tempo-changes abundant in each and every song, no doubt that “Lucifer, Leviathan Logos” is going to be one of most praised released of 2013!

Finnish combo Deathchain have finished their sixth album "Ritual Death Metal", which is set for release on Svart Records on April 5th. Keeping up with the band’s tradition to include the word ‘death’ or ‘dead’ in their titles, their name of their sixth fulllength alone ‘Ritual Death Metal’ feels like a warning. In the wake of an already impressive ‘Death Gods’ three years ago, this new offering to the Ancients been recorded last summer with Swedish wünderkid Tore Stjerna in Stockholm in his worldrenowned Necromorbus studio where most famously Watain but also Ondskapt, Funeral Mist and many others have sworn a pact with the Great Horned One. Guest starring on the album is one LG Petrov from Entombed, who provides vocals for the track "Like Worms Upon The Lands". As eclectic as the label is, Svart Records have a strong foundation in death metal, having reissued albums by vintage acts like Abhorrence, Xysma and the resuscitated Convulse. Each member sports an impressive curriculum vitae of musical misbehaviours that reads like a who’s who of the Finnish extreme metal scene (Forgotten Horror, Demilich, Deathbound, Ajattara, and so on), and the band's two guitarists are already part of the Svart family with Jess and The Ancient Ones. Way out in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, between Iceland and Scotland, is a cluster of 18 small islands called the Faroe Islands. Thats where Gudrid Hansdóttir was born and raised. Her music is a Lilith Fair-worthy blend of chamber pop and perky folk-rock and the past years she's been performing in Europe and USA. Gudrid started singing at an early age and shared a high interest in Music. She loved going through her fathers vinyl records and she discovered great artists like Kate Bush, Dolly Parton, Jethro Tull and Jimi Hendrix. Her father was a highly skilled guitar player on the Faroes and on Gudrid's 14 year old birthday he taught her a couple of guitar chords and she started writing songs of her own. In 2007 Gudrid finally released her debut album Love is Dead, which featured old and new songs. It was well received by critics and the same year she won the award "Best Female Artist" at the Planet Awards (Faroese Music Awards). After her first album Gudrid performed in Denmark, Norway, Iceland and Germany with great success. Her self-released second album, The Sky Is Opening (2009), quickly became the bestselling album on the Faroes and was awarded the Faroese Planet Awards "Album of the Year". Her new album "Beyond the Grey" was released in June 2011.The new album is filled with catchy folk songs with great inspiration from the Faroese culture and the distinctive Faroese weather. At the moment Gudrid is enjoying life, writing music and performing on the Faroe Islands and around the world.
