AMERICAN HOLLOW - LP

Band:BASK
Album:AMERICAN HOLLOW - LP
Label:THIS CHARMING MAN
Format:VINYL LP
Genre:Alt-Country / Americana

With roots in americana, stoner metal and post-rock, Bask is turning out their own brand of doom. Psychedelic, heavy, and scenic songs weave through sections of driving riffs, thundering percussion, loose grooves and glimmering guitar. All topped with vocals that conjure spirits of old country crooners. “Bask are a young band from North Carolina that play a highly original blend of Americana, country, post-rock and stoner/doom metal. American Hollow is the band’s debut on The Path Less Traveled Records and, without a doubt, I can say it is one of the most unique records I’ve come across in years. “High Mountain Pass” is an energetic album opener, starting with a half-time shuffle that breaks into a pretty straight-forward stoner rock groove, similar to some of the less aggressive tunes by Red Fang. The vocals have a pretty noticeable twang to them, giving the music a distinctly country vibe, though with a bit more power and volume than anything you’ll hear on a modern country record. The vocals are a strong point, to be sure, but the music they’re soaring over is just as powerful; jangly guitars, low rumbly bass, and big drums that are pretty reminiscent of the tone John Bonham laid down in classic Led Zeppelin, though with a little more dynamics. The first track might be a little misleading though, as the rest of the album has an almost dreamlike feel to them, particularly on the slower songs like ”American Hollow” and “A Man’s Worth,” both of which have a melancholy country-like feel to them. “American Hollow” in particular has a post-rock, indie rock vibe mixed in, almost like Band Of Horses, except Bask go into a bit heavier territory, whereas Band Of Horses obviously have a more radio-friendly vibe.” LTD LP

DEBUT - CD

Band:HEADS
Album:DEBUT - CD
Label:THIS CHARMING MAN
Format:CD
Genre:Postrock / Post Hardcore / Noise

Formed in 2014 by two native Germans and one wandering Australian, HEADS. collectively are like-minded individuals, drawing inspiration from the same filthy pools. With a straight-up, no-frills approach, and influences as diverse as The Jesus Lizard, Shellac, Rowland S. Howard, and by the likes of Young Widows, My Disco, this trio is much more than the sum of their parts. Serendipity and pure good luck led to the paths of these musicians crossing. Fresh off the plane from Australia, with the sound of a former band disintegrating still ringing in his ears, vocalist and guitarist Ed Fraser was set about finding new collaborators. The Ocean‘s bass player, Chris Breuer, meanwhile was seeking new creative outlets whilst on tour and when conversation started flowing with Ed, he roped in The Ocean road crew member, Hamburg-based Peter Voigtmann, on drums. With the key players in place, navigating geographical distances and writing a record was next on the agenda. Much of this took place whilst the members were spread out across the globe, often taking advantage of the backstage wifi at various festival, and arranging intense practices in Berlin when schedules aligned. When the songwriting was over, the band headed into the studio with Jonathon Nido of Coilguns to commit the tracks to record. The album was recorded in September 2014 at Bikini Test in the Swiss Alps – a studio chosen for the size and complexities of the space available, which allowed the band to capture the dark intensity of their tracks perfectly. Taking their cues from Steve Albini’s school of thought, the band recorded live, getting down 13 tracks in three days -including a guest appearance from Louis Jucker of Coilguns – which have been whittled down to 6 for their debut. The record is mixed and mastered by Cult of Luna‘s Magnus Lindberg, who counts his own band, PG.Lost, Kongh and EF among his studio credits

AND THEN RISE

Band:THE MOTH
Album:AND THEN RISE
Label:THIS CHARMING MAN
Format:CD
Genre:Stoner/Doom/Occult/Sludge Metal

A young three-piece from Hamburg. Started in late ’12, the guys didn’t take long to record their first Longplay and releasing it on their own as limited CD (100 copies made). One of these CD found its way to my desk and i was immediately blown away. The play a well tempered mix of Baroness and Kylesa, to keep it simple they rock like hell. No effects used on the guitar, a hammering drumset and a deep punching bass plus female/male singing. that’s pretty much the trick!that’s what the Sludgelord has to say about their Album “They fall”:“Now here is a great band that flew right under my radar. The Moth is a Psych based Sludge/Stoner Metal band that fans of Baroness, Kylesa and Mastodon will surely love like I did. Their debut album – They Fall – is 11 excellent hard-rocking tracks full of epic riffs. The dual vocals of Cécile and Freden give the album a real edge. Sometimes they feel they are having a duel at times. At it makes the album ever more intriguing. These are some original and very different vocals you do not hear much of within the Sludge/Stoner Metal scene. The album is expertly played and produced through out. If you like you’re Sludge/Stoner Metal with an extra layer of lo-fi psychedelic fuzz based vibes then you can’t go wrong here. The Moth deserves your attention now. This album came as a real surprise to me when the band originally contacted me. The album cover might not give anything away but as the famous saying goes – Appearances can be deceiving – Or – Never judge a book by its cover. And both of them are true for The Moth. You want more evidence of how great this band is. Check out excellent tracks – Rawhawk, This Is The Lie and my fave track – They Fall.Look this album is testament that Germany have another excellent Sludge/Stoner Metal band to call upon. It could be that these Sludge Rockers could be one of my fave discoveries of 2013. Excellent and Highly Recommended - FOR FANS OF: KYLESSA, BARONESS

TIDAL SLEEP / ORBIT THE EARTH SPLIT

Band:THE TIDAL SLEEP / ORBIT THE EARTH
Album:TIDAL SLEEP / ORBIT THE EARTH SPLIT
Label:THIS CHARMING MAN
Format:VINYL LP
Genre:Postrock / Post Hardcore / Noise

Finally it’s coming! the two befriended bands The Tidal Sleep and Orbit The Earth long planned Split 12 Inch is finally there. For both bands the record is something special. The Tidal Sleeps first release after their smash record “Vorstellungskraft” which sold 3500 copies in just 4 months. This time the dudes changed their approach to song writing. Each song is written by a different band member, meaning, 3 brand new songs and a Orbit The Earth cover! The Orbit The Earth camp changed quite a bit in the last 12 months. Even though the bass player and the singer left the band managed to pull through the mess with a new bass player and Julian, the guitar player/ songwriter covering the vocal parts. The personnel change left a mark and changed the sound of the band a little bit, heading into a more pop direction, without losing the original OTE sound! The songs were written and arranged on guitar, which makes the songs more accessible, without losing the OTE madness which marks their sound. Every OTE-fan should not be disappointed by this. There’s no way why you shouldn’t get hyped about this record, except you hate the band and the label, but still then you probably will freak out. “Excellent and highly recommended!”  / LTD LP

THE CURIOUS WORLD OF

Band:THE BAD DETECTIVES
Album:THE CURIOUS WORLD OF
Label:WESTERN STAR
Format:CD
Genre:Rock And Roll/Psychobilly

The Bad Detectives are a cult band in every sense of the word. Their songs are eclectic and often tongue in cheek. Their music has turned up on many TV shows much to the band’s amazement. They sell well and have an underground following – hence this being their 5th album release to date! The band also seem to get a lot of airplay ranging from Local BBC regional stations, to BBC 6music and BBC Radio 2

BORDERLAND

Band:RIO
Album:BORDERLAND
Label:Krescendo
Format:CD
Genre:Classic Rock/Metal

Although its n undeniable fact that the UK isn’t the natural habitat of AOR and its melodic off-shoots, a number of very fine British acts have plied their trade in that particular field. Amongst their number we can list FM, Strangeways, Airrace, Shy, and a handful of others. One name that is sadly seldom mentioned but is just as worthy of consideration is that of Rio.

Less a band and more of a studio project consisting of vocalist and guitarist Jon Neill and Steve Rodford (son of Argent bassist Jim Rodford) on Bass, Keyboards and drums, Their debut album, which you now hold in your grateful hands, is widely considered to be one of the very best AOR albums to have ever surfaced outside of the USA, and one cursory listen is all that is needed to convince the listener that this is indeed the case.

This was how Rio sounded for a brief but glorious period in those long off and much missed 80’s…

LIVE ABORTION PLUS

Band:BIRTH CONTROL
Album:LIVE ABORTION PLUS
Label:SIREENA
Format:CD
Genre:Kraut / Space Rock

This was really right on the button of the German teenage scene during the late Sixties, which was definitely politically charged: fancy using BIRTH CONTROL as a group name, the Pope must have panicked! But this should not distract from the core business of “our” once Berlin based band: The Birth Control boys succeeded in creating their very own brand of Rock – with international sophistication and universal energy. This CD presents those numbers by drummer/singer “Nossi” Noske and guitarist Bruno Frenzel which the world still needs, and which should be updated by new live tours by the members of the last line-up: Sascha Kühn/Hannes Vesper/Martin Ettrich – with drummer Manni von Bohr and ex singing bass player Peter Föller, the other BC lead vocalist apart from Nossi, for instance on the album PLASTIC PEOPLE. Most of the titles on this concert document were recorded in the autumn of 1983, when Stefan Linke played second guitar (assisting in twin lead passages in the vein of the Allman Brothers and Wishbone Ash), Jürgen Goldbeck worked the bass and Jörg Becker handled keyboards. But first and foremost, Nossi called the shots, and Bruno Frenzel was still part of the procedures – only weeks after these concerts, he would succumb to an onsatge electrocution.
