INSTANT EVERYTHING, CONSTANT NOTHING

Band:UNTIED STATES
Album:INSTANT EVERYTHING, CONSTANT NOTHING
Label:Distile
Format:CD
Genre:Alt Rock

Atlanta’s UNTIED STATES harness a whirlwind of sound that inhabits a world slightly askew. Taking direction from a torn up and oddly reassembled guide to songwriting, the group explores known terrain but takes wild paths to reach unpredictable, yet ultimately rewarding destinations. With a barrage of driving samples, interlaced melodic sheets of guitars, and just-enough disciplined noise, it all moves swiftly from elegant to disorienting, in an adventurous course that directs vocals that alternately veer between croon and squall. At the heart of it all lays a fundamental search to be “untied”- to say what hasn’t yet been said and the belief that there will always be new ways to say it. On UNTIED STATES'forthcoming LP, Instant Everything, Constant Nothing, core songwriters Colin Arnstein and Skip Engelbrecht have reined in some of the eccentricities of their past albums only to spin out into brand new territories. The album exhibits a new sonic clarity and focus, courtesy of new member/engineer Darren Tablan, who brought the two out of the house and into a large-scale studio, exposing them to a new palette of sounds while providing a keen guidance to their onslaught of ideas. The contrast that once existed between their driving songs and out-there soundscapes has been replaced by a new fabric, where these very different sides of songwriting are now interwoven and overlaid instead of seamed together at their ends. New rhythm recruits- drummer Satchel Mallon (who appears on the record) and bassist Philip Frobos help to bring all of it to live audiences and undoubtedly to intriguing new places.

AN EVENING OF BAD DECISIONS

Band:STATIC RADIO NJ
Album:AN EVENING OF BAD DECISIONS
Label:BLACK NUMBERS
Format:VINYL LP
Genre:Punk / Hardcore

The debut full-length from Static Radio NJ not only delivers on the foundation of the band's early achievements, it proudly builds a towering skyscraper of soaring melodic punk rock anthems on top of it. Songs like "Marc," "Places" and "The Waiting Game" overflow with crunchy riffs, buoyant rhythms and choruses that are so infectious it's easto see that spending time on the road with their peers really rubbed off on Static Radio NJ. Of course, those barnburners are still fueled by the band's hardcore roots, and the buzz saw wave of razor-sharp guitars and rapid-fire drum fills only make the passionate melodies resonate that much more brightly. Even SRNJ's more aggressive, in-your-face offerings such as "Bothered," "Ferren Decks" and "Standing Still" manage to keep it catchy amidst the raucous, no-frills sonic attack.

SHOW AND TELL

Band:THE BIRTHDAY MASSACRE
Album:SHOW AND TELL
Label:Repo
Format:DVD
Genre:Alt Rock

A captivating hybrid of 80's electronica and aggressive guitars, curiously fused with a cinematic quality of melodic progressions, The Birthday Massacre's soundscapes have encapsulated a diverse and devout fan base. They have come along way since their inception in 2000. The Toronto based outfit continues to garner new fans worldwide not only in the industrial and electronic scenes, but the rock community as well. In July of 2002, they self released the limited edition CD Nothing and Nowhere and added a new drummer, Rhim. Two years later, they followed up with the EP, Violet. 2005 became a big year for The Birthday Massacre. Not only did they add O-En on keyboards, but were signed in Europe by RepoRecords and in North America by Metropolis Records. Both labels re-released Violet as a full length album with four extra tracks. A video for their song "Blue" was also launched later that year, which is produced by NYC artist and director Daniel Ouellette. Since the release of ‘Walking With Strangers’, in September of 2007, The Birthday Massacre have been touring constantly in Europe and North America. While they were touring Germany shortly after its release, they played a gig at Knust (a club in Hamburg Germany that holds about 500 people). It just so happened that we gave permission for Crazy Clip, (a local video producer) to record and film the performance. Originally there were only supposed to be 2 or 3 clips aired locally. The project lay dormant for the next 18 months while the band continued touring and then began work on their follow up to Walking With Strangers which is scheduled for release this coming fall. Beginning in December of last year Rainbow and Falcore started going through the video and audio recordings from that Hamburg show and decided that although it wasn't planned for a "live" record, there was an intimate, small-club feel to the whole project that they liked. And so, they set about editing and mixing the tracks to form the CD, ‘Show and Tell', which was released May 6th. The DVD of this concert will follow now! All concert features come in 5.1 mix and stereo as well. Besides the main feature, the club show in Hamburg there will be also live footage from the two festival appearances at M’era Luna Festival in 2005 and 2006, both again in 5.1 and stereo mix. Furthermore the DVD will contain an Interview with the band and a picture gallery. This collection will add another dimension to their already sizeable reputation. In addition to being essential listening for current fans of the band, this DVD is also a great introduction to the music of ‘The Birthday Massacre’ for those who have yet to check them out.

Album:PRIVELIGE ENTAILS RESPONSIBILITY
Label:Repo
Format:CD

AN AXE TO GRIND / SOUL SURVIVOR

Band:KEN TAMPLIN
Album:AN AXE TO GRIND / SOUL SURVIVOR
Label:KMG
Format:CD
Genre:Classic Rock/Metal

After two very successful glam/metal albums as the frontman for Shout, Frontline Records released Ken Tamplin's solo debut in 1990 on its Intense Records label, with the assistance of Lanny Cordola and Scott Van Zen. Since this solo debut was being recorded at the same time as Magdallan-Big Bang, the musical similarities are noticeable. An Axe To Grind is a dazzling compilation of guitar and vocal theatrics, sporting Ken's range-defining vocals, pop/metal guitar licks, and well-crafted songs. Arriving at a time when Christian metal suffered from inadequate song writing, subpar production and boring presentation, Tamplin offered a breath of fresh air and excellence. An Axe To Grind was an experimental album, featuring eclectic outings with diverse session musicians and friends. Five tracks are instrumentals. Most of the songs are typical songs in the Def Leppard vein, plus a couple of Petra-ish power ballads. By the time Soul Survivor came out, the breakup with Lanny Cordola had occurred, So Ken left most of the axe work to Scott Van Zen, sealing Ken's credentials as a great vocalist (with a four to five octave range) and songwriter. It moves even further toward the more commercial sound of Boston or Journey, mixing hard rock tracks with art-rock meanderings. This is the original 1999 KMG Records version, when they released a '2-for-1' CD re-issue containing most of the songs from both albums. Out-of-print copies have been unearthed and made available one last time!
