KINDER MACHINES

Band:BEATEN BY THEM
Album:KINDER MACHINES
Label:BURNSIDE
Format:CD
Genre:Alt Rock

Beaten by Them's fifth release, Kinder Machines, could be one of the finest sounding records you will ever hear. Building on the college radio chart-topping successes of last year's thumping "Invisible Origins" and ethereal follow-up "People Start Listening", the San Francisco/Melbourne/New York ensemble's latest offering sucks the listener in from the first booming kick, never letting go over a joyous ride that was captured and mixed completely live to tape on a Northern Californian farm by Grammywinning engineer Oz Fritz (Tom Waits, Bill Laswell, The Ramones). Combining powerhouse drumming and percussion, intense bass and electronic layers, soaring cello and trumpet lines, ever-present keyboards and hypnotic acoustic guitar mantras, Kinder Machines is a triumphant musical statement that blurs musical boundaries, reaffirming Beaten by Them's critical standing as one of modern music's most exciting, creative and surprising groups. Presented in a beautiful individually numbered limited first edition hardcover digibook package.

SIGNALS TO A HABITABLE ZONE

Band:LONG DISTANCE POISON
Album:SIGNALS TO A HABITABLE ZONE
Label:BURNSIDE
Format:LP/DVD
Genre:Drone/Ambient

Clear vinyl LP with DVD and blueprint - Hand numbered with invisible ink and limited to 500. After a few years of consistently dazzling live audiences in that most-jaded Earthbound portal of New York City, Long Distance Poison have released compositions via Thurston Moore's label Ecstatic Peace and Steve Moore's imprint VCO, Long Distance Poison (with production by Brendon Anderegg of Mountains) have now created two pieces of true experimentation: Signals to a Habitable Zone. Long Distance Poison have utilized two distinct "signals," (songs for the stars) also set to visual accompaniment by director Matthew Caron and included on a separate DVD.

"Signals To A Habitable Zone succeeds because it dares to deploy all of the appropriate bleeps and whirrs calculated to send listeners spinning into a deep trance, yet they don't sound like anyone but themselves. Bravo." Julian Cope

TASTYVILLE

Band:THREE SECOND KISS
Album:TASTYVILLE
Label:African Tape
Format:CD
Genre:Postrock / Post Hardcore / Noise

Just take a song like Maya. It starts with a deep and declamatory voice, which almost reminds a sort of Ian Curtis’ american melody stretched out on a carpet of obsessive drum and bass that seems to be coming from Rio de Janeiro more than from Chicago, topped by a slippery guitar that makes you think punk also bloomed in Caribbean lands. Suddenly melody changes and a skinny rock stone takes its place. It is made of solid and blank parts and the melody gives way to scratching frames, the guitar and drums chase as guttural bellowing of elephants who rest only at the end, where tribal rhythm collapses and yealds to a skeletal melancholy blues. Maya is just one of the 9 tracks featured on Tastyville, the new Three Second Kiss album after 4 years from the previous Long Distance (2008 African Tape), but it is the metaphor-song of a work born from the belly most than the brain. Each piece meets only the cinematic structure of the skin, changing course and direction without premeditation of style that is not the free guide of instinct. Tastyville shows a new strength of the Italian band, its desire to open up and let luxuriantly explode a sound - the rough and minimal sound created by the guitar, bass, drums triangle - in a brand new and free fluorescence that maintains the attitude of punk without its but visionary sound anymore. May be that's why Tastyville is an experience that embodies several emotional states rather than showing us only one philological style. No labels to spend ‘cause everything is mixed, blended and digested. After many years of activities so many things have been told about Three Second Kiss. For us, the 9 tracks of Tastyville are primitive, emotional and visionare music. This is exactly what remains when you take away the superfluous.

Mastered by Bob Weston (Shellac, Mission of Burma) - Appearance at ATP Festival (Camber Sands) on Nov 30 2012!! (SHELLAC CURATED)

VIDEO MUSICS 3

Band:ALEXIS GIDEON
Album:VIDEO MUSICS 3
Label:African Tape
Format:VINYL LP
Genre:Avantgarde/Electronic

Alexis Gideon Reveals What 20th c Irish Literature, Avant-garde Music and Stop-motion Animation Can Offer Each Other. Alexis Gideon will be presenting the third installment in his critically- acclaimed multimedia opera series, Video Musics III: Floating Oceans, beginning this fall. Portland, Oregon’s historic Hollywood Theatre will host the world premiere on October 11, 2012. Gideon is an interdisciplinary iconoclast whose body of work joyfully challenges the presumed constraints of visual arts and music genres. Where others attempting the same projects might get lost in the weeds, Gideon’s ferocious intelligence and crystal-clear vision produces some of the most engaging pieces audiences will encounter. Gideon worked with Cynthia Star (Lead Painter for Coraline, Laika Studios) and Jacob Rubin (Best New American Voices), among others, to produce the video piece. Video Musics III: Floating Oceans was funded by a generous award from The Regional Arts and Culture Council, the second consecutive grant from this organization Gideon has received. (Gideon’s first RACC award was for Video Musics II: Sun Wu-Kong). Video Musics III: Floating Oceans is a 38-minute stop-motion animation video opera based on the works of the early 20th century Irish writer Lord Dunsany, and inspired by the time and dream experiments of the Irish physicist John William Dunne. The piece is dedicated to Flann O’Brien. Video Musics III: Floating Oceans contrasts the vivid dreams of its poet-protagonist with the foreboding routine of pedestrian life. Parts operate under the tow of dream logic. All dialogue and narration are expressed through lyrics and music performed live in front of the projected video. The piece explores non-linear and traditional linear narrative, and uses the musical meters of modern classical, hip-hop, ambient, and psychedelia.

SHADOW BOXING

Band:ZION I
Album:SHADOW BOXING
Label:IDC
Format:CD
Genre:Rap/Hip Hop

Hip-Hop group Zion I continue to forge new ground musically on their latest LP Shadowboxing, a beat-heavy hip-hop album decidedly grittier than past projects. Always pushing the literal—and figurative—needle forward, the duo, consisting of emcee Zumbi, and producer Amp Live, have once again created something experimental and heartfelt. Shadowboxing features guests such as Bassnectar, Collie Buddz, Grouch and Eligh, and Goapele. A move from the live instrumentation of their last record, Shadowboxing enlists a range of producers such as Traxamillion, DexBeats, Minnesota, who bring an unconventional, eclectic flavour to the album. Thematically, Shadowboxing is signature Zion I: "This is an album about metaphorical kicks and throws at oneself," explains Zumbi, "looking inward at the shadow self, and seeking awareness in the darkness of one's own psyche."

Album:IF THIS COCKROACH DOESN`T DIE I WILL
Label:METAL POSTCARD
Format:LP
Genre:Psych/Garage

"Pairs is a duo from Shanghai who kick out heavy hypnotic lo‐fi shit rock punk pop that kills, their sound dense and noisy and jangly and chaotic, the sound rooted in classic indie rock for sure, but here delivered in a sort of shitgaze style" -  Aquarius Records

Written, recorded and produced in a couple of weeks Pairs continue their quest to be the best band you never heard of. 17 tracks, all recorded in one weekend while buried deep in an underground cold war bunker in Shanghai, produced by The Acid Pony Club and delivered on double vinyl.

Xiao Zhong and F of Pairs say……… “If this cockroach doesn’t die, I will” is 17 songs about dying abroad, being in a shit band, having a shit boss, spending stupid amounts of time with people who bring out the worst in you and ignoring the great people around you and being frustrated by lazy people.”

"Summer Sweat could be the most straightforward record reviewed in this column ever, but it's great, in that it makes you feel about 14, illegally wasted and in love" - The Wire.

THE QUEST FOR NONSENSE NEVER ENDS

Band:SALMA GANDHI
Album:THE QUEST FOR NONSENSE NEVER ENDS
Label:Transubstans
Format:CD
Genre:JAZZ/JAZZ ROCK

Salma Gandhi is a swedish instrumental band formed 2005 in Malmö. The members had been active at the stoner/metal/punkscene in Malmö for years and was hungry to create something totally different. After hours of jam sessions and a lot of fun they started to find some kind of a sound and concept and started making compositions. The musical genre is sometimes described as 70´s filmmusic or stonerjazz and the goal of the band is to give the recipient a somewhat narrative musical trip with a gallery of strange characters and different murky landscapes popping up along the way. 2012 they will release their debut album "The Quest For Nonsense Never Ends" at Transubstans records. Some of the main influenses are Pink Floyd, Oddjob, The Ethiopiques, Boris Vian and Alfred Jarry.
