A thaumatrope is a toy of the nineteenth century, based on the principle of optical illusion. Two pictures
drawn on the two sides of a piece of cardboard become one by simply twisting pieces of string attached to
it, making the thaumatrope rotate. The flying bird seems to be caught in a cage.
The third Paper Bird album „Thaumatrope“ was written and recorded between spring and autumn of 2009,
once more entirely at Anna Kohlweis’ own home, strongly influenced by the comics, novels, films and
televison shows consumed in the time of making the record.
Beats and rythms are often made from field recordings, the shutter of a camera rumbles in four-four time,
fragments of piano recordings accompany a single voice on a journey through everyday's luggage.
„Thaumatrope“ is whistling, stomping, shouting and clapping itself through stories that are much darker
than they may seem at first, using the singer’s voice as multiple choirs, performing exorcisms and
recovering ghosts, singing in unison and against each other.

Already staples in the Richmond punk scene, the timing was just right for them to all get together and start a new project. Their goals are simple: To
share their music with people while managing to not go broke in the process. Always humble, Landmines might shrug at their ongoing comparison to the likes of other hometown heroes Avail and Strike Anywhere. However, their influences come from a place that one might not suspect. They have also been inclined to
take a page out of the books of Hot Water Music, Verbal Assault, The Bouncing Souls, Fifteen and Jawbreaker. This combination created a sound that is at once passionate, personal, political, melodic, relevant, fast and fun. With the creation of their limited release demo CD on Pop Faction Records in 2006, they quickly
garnered the attention of Vinnie Fiorello the founder of new music/art label Paper + Plastick. Their debut self-titled full length is the first release for the fledgling label and it does not disappoint. Recorded by Brian McTernan at his Salad Days studio (Hot Water Music, Texas is the Reason, Bane, Strike Anywhere, The
Loved Ones), the production is loud, punchy and not overly clean. With a considerable amount of touring under their collective belt, they've already had the opportunity to share the same stage with the likes of Gaslight Anthem, Smoke or Fire, American Steel, Tim Barry, Polar Bear Club, Small Brown Bike, Seaweed

Ex-Foodbrain guitarist Shinki Chen, bass player Masayayoshi Kabe (also know as M Glue) and Phillipino
Vietnam war veteran Joey ‘Pepe’ Smith, who doubled as both the trio’s drummer and vocalist, released
two legendary albums in the early ‘70s. Eve, the earlier of the band’s two efforts, was probably the band’s
only “real” recording as the self-titled 2nd release in 1972 was put together by Smith from studio outtakes
of Chen’s guitar playing and tracks omitted from Eve.
Eve is a bluesy, psychedelic album, with Chen’s Hendrix-style guitar playing firmly underpinned by
Smith’s insistent percussion style modelled on the playing of his idol, Ginger Baker. The band dissolved
immediately after the release of Eve as the other two members found Smith’s drug-fuelled lifestyle (he was
a huge fan of amphetamines and diligently applied himself to establishing a prodigeous habit) decidedly
unappealing. Chen decided he didn’t want to record again, and became a successful live artist, Joey went
back to the Philippines and started the power trio Juan de la Cruz Band, and Masayoshi Kabe would win
fame with the band Pink Cloud. In spite of their short-lived activity, Speed, Glue and Shinki were
important, first and foremost as pioneers of the Japanese psychedelic rock scene.
