Vanum was formed in 2014 as the collaborative project of K. Morgan (Ash Borer) and M. Rekevics (Yellow Eyes, Vorde, Vilkacis). Drawing from the old traditions of the genre, Vanum play elemental and majestic black metal with an unyielding force and passion, showcasing a sharply focused and dynamic sense of composition marked as much by somber patience as arrogant strength. 2019 will see the release of Ageless Fire on Profound Lore Records. Expanding upon the triumphant framework hinted at with 2017’s Burning Arrow EP, as well as the majestic fury of 2015’s Realm of Sacrifice, Vanum’s newest effort sees the band continuing to chart a path of steady ascendency and constant growth. While the the album’s overt Bathory-by-way-of-Hellas inspiration is of note, Ageless Fire is by no means a throwback album. The towering songs that make up the album emerged organically, and naturally reflect their heavy metal lineage as much as they also reveal the essential core of Vanum's own unique identity. This ability to interpolate influence and individual inspiration into a seamless and deeply resonant whole make "Ageless Fire" more than simply an exercise in emulation and further cements Vanum's place as a singular band, in reverence to the past while looking defiantly towards the future. Additionally, Ageless Fire is the first to feature the band’s expanded lineup. In addition to M. Rekevics and K. Morgan, the band now includes long term live members E. Priesner and L. Sheppard. In this radiant and fully realized form, Vanum have crafted an album that builds on the muscular and triumphant nature of previous releases and expands upon it with a sense of mythic grandeur.

The cleaning robots return with their first album in ten years. Cleaning Women, with their DIY instruments, release a new album on Svart Records on February 15th. Titled Intersubjectivity, the album has been mixed by Einstürzende Neubauten s Alexander Hacke, which has resulted in the band s curiously original approach to music sounding more organic than ever. We wanted the album to sound like how we sound live on stage, at least to our ears. We wanted to carry our junk instruments to the finest studio we can find so that we could bring out the smallest nuances of the sound our instruments produce. We recorded the album in the brand new E-Studio in Sipoo, Finland, with as few overdubs as possible. Alexander Hacke, who has three decades of experience with the clang and rattle of junk metal, managed to dig up the essential elements in our music. Studio sessions took a mere five days, as did mixing, so everything happened quite intuitively with little polish to things. That s why we feel the result sounds intergalactically fresh , comments the band.

Hellfire Ocean Void is composed by 8 songs that unfolds themselves effortlessly perfect in the tension between a delicate sense of composition and the uncompromising urgency with which the five musicians deliver the performance of each song. The writing, recording, mixing and production was all done during the winter 2017-2018 by Demon Head in their own analog studio. Especially created for dancefloors, these 10 tracks will transport you in an imaginary territory, populated by fantastic realism and archetypal divinities. On stage, Sociedade Recreativa take the shape of a multidisciplinary collective, incorporating the delirium of the video maker Marcelo Valente and the ardor of talented dancer Tereza Azevedo. Naðra returned to reap more souls at Roadburn 2017 In 2016, we introduced our faithful Roadburners to the obscure might of the Icelandic black metal underground. By having Misþyrming as our artist in residence, we were able to feature a series of other bands connected to them on our bill, and all of them made abundantly clear with their devastating performances why we are so impressed with this particular scene. Naðra, which features four Misþyrming members plus the unhinged demon that is vocalist Ö, gave us one of the most enduring experiences of them all when they damn nearly brought down the Extase venue. Sometimes, however, once is not enough. When, a couple of months after Roadburn 2016, we witnessed Naðra laying waste to a petrified audience during the amazing Eistnaflug festival in Neskaupstaður, Iceland, that tiny voice in our head that kept nagging us turned into a roar: Naðra need more attention from us, from you, from everyone. This black magic is too powerful to be confined to small spaces. After that staggering show in Iceland, the decision was pretty much already made in our minds Naðra needed to return to Roadburn. Therefore, in 2017, we are breaking them free, free from the confines of a smaller venue, or of an artist in residence programme. Like opening a Pandora s box, all those tortured, twisting hymns of sickness that made Allir Vegir Til Glötunar one of the most harrowing records of 2016 will now resonate inside the Het Patronaat as if they were hissing, soul-consuming demons flying free and zoning in on you, beloved Roadburners. THE LORANES is about rock. Garage rock meets neo-heavy blues meets psychedelic. Distortion galore, but among all the distortion, it is the catchy melodies that crawl out of the speakers and settle. Pop with barbs, dark and scratchy. It smells incessantly of cellars and glowing tube amplifiers. It seems that THE LORANES only existed in extremes. All or nothing. Leave full throttle or empty car and get out. When the band suddenly appeared on the scene in 2015 with their debut 7 "vinyl (H42-017, H42 Records) and debut Album 'Trust' (Noisolution), the trio had just moved into their rehearsal room. And just after bassist Mammut got out after two successful albums with KADAVAR, THE LORANES got their debut in the stores, got the best reviews and then toured Europe for weeks. The second album '2nd' was written, recorded and produced quiet fast, and the next big tour will followed fall 2017. Not only hear the scratching and buzzing of the pipes, you almost smell the muff. When the mind ceases to respond to the physical world around him. Endessiah was built in doubt, fear, self-beating, screams, smiles and euphoria. New album of intense and carefully crafted soundscapes from Bulgaria s SHRINE after his acclaimed 2016 album Ordeal 26.04.86 . Based on the fictional story for Tomb Raider III, created by the British game studio CORE in 1998, the story begins in Antarctica millions of years ago, where a meteorite has crashed into the landmass and when the continent was still located in the tropics. Millennials later it was discovered by the ancient Polynesians who had reached the Antarctic coast and they soon realised that strange otherworldly powers surround the celestial rock and so the people began to worship it as a deity. After severe mutations started to occur among their newborn, the settlers fled in terror and never came back but before they left, they sealed the meteorite into a deep underground chamber, locked by four "keys", four unique objects crafted from the same alien material as the meteorite itself. In the 19th century, a group of sailors travelling with Charles Darwin came to Antarctica and rediscovered the artefacts. The story follows the search for the four artefacts and the rediscovering of the meteorite, hypothesised to contain the most important findings in genetics and evolution since Darwin. A new collective led by former Hadewych member Peter Johan Nÿland, also a recent member of Trepaneringsritualen. Etmaal ("natural day") is the first in a series of explorations that aim to serve as a channel between the ethereal and chthonic, sacred and profane, the innermost black well and the outermost white sun. The album follows the circadian path as an analogue to the revelation of the actual self, with the sun as the inverted eye that unveils all things in their temporality, opposite the eternal inner black of night. Sudden transitions between coercive percussive hammering and sharp boreal drone pieces seek to mirror cosmic events; from glacial movements to throbbing punctuation and sudden death and with each end resolved arises a new tension and an attempt at cleansing and delving deeper with the intent of finally arriving at the inner clearing. In the recording process for Etmaal, the group effectively alternated between states of extreme focus and hiati in which subconscious impulses were allowed to arise and the result is an album that skilfully wanders an essential pathway between two planes in its own distinctive way. On this album, O Saala Sakraal is a five piece outfit that consists of four percussionists; Scramasax (Volksweerbaarheid/Hadewych/Distel), Rene Aquarius (Dead Neanderthals, Fantoom, Krishna), Patricia Manko (Hadewych), Donné Brok (Donné Et Desirée) and Peter Johan Nÿland (Distel, Hadewych), the latter who plays tapes and piano-string percussion instrument "draak", next to regular percussion. The group first came together for a series shows as Hadewych with an extended percussion section, but it soon became clear that its pieces - partly composed, partly improvised - claimed a realm of their own and drifted away from the overall sound of Hadewych, into something more monolithic, mystical and opaque. An enormous mass which extrudes black tentacles, slime-dripping mouths, and short, writhing goat legs. Small creatures are continually spat forth by the monstrosity, which are either consumed into the miasmatic form or escape to some monstrous life elsewhere. Of all the mythos deities, Shub-Niggurath is probably the most extensively worshipped. Her worshippers include the Hyperboreans, the Muvians, T'yog of K'naa, and the people of Sarnath, as well as any number of druidic and barbaric cults. She is also worshipped by the non-human species of the mythos, such as the "Fungi from Yuggoth" (the Mi-Go) and the Nug-Soth of Yaddith. With the proper occult paraphernalia, Shub-Niggurath can be summoned to any woodlands at the time of the new moon. So is this a compilation? Dead Melodies presents us a dark cinematic space album with Primal Destination. The dying star shone weak in the ancient system. Desperate bursts of green-tinged solar flares scattered towards the nearest planet; a terrestrial world circled by a ring of moons. The crew's search for habitable lands seemed to be reaching an end. Upon descent, as far as the eye could see, jagged lapis-blue karsts peaked the horizon, almost reaching up to meet the flares above as they breached the atmosphere. Dazzling pearlescent skies laced with layers of swirling clouds gave the impression this was a land harmonious with nature, but as the exploration pod set down in the clearing of a misty swamp, this seemed far from true. Remnants of civilizations tore through the land from what appeared to be a long forgotten race. The karsts were hollowed-out with metal shards spiking out the sides, entangled in flora and corroding at the roots. Strange bird calls carried on the wind, underpinned by bloodthirsty growls that echoed from the tangled foliage. In the distance, beyond the low lying mists, sentry beacons lit up the overlooking foot hills followed by search lights that scoured the glade highlighting the endless sea of ruins before focusing right on the pod, and then the chase began... The metal scene moves fast. Hundreds of releases are made available every month from new bands jockeying for position or veteran outfits doing their best to keep up with the times. It simply may no longer be feasible to release an album, support it with some shows, then disappear for two years only to do it all over again. Such is the line of thinking for Canada s Gatekeeper, who return in 2019 with the four-song Grey Maiden EP. The follow-up to their successful East of Sun full-length debut, Grey Maiden includes the brand-new title track and acoustic Moss, a re-recording of Tale of Twins from their first demo and a cover of Richard III by obscure NWOBHM outfit Tredegar. Gatekeeper who consist of vocalist Jean-Pierre, guitarist/founding member Geoff Blackwell, lead guitarist Kenny Kroecher, bassist David Messier and drummer Tommy Tro originally had the idea to record an EP after being asked by Skol Records to contribute to their NOWBHM compilation, Grandbreton Invasion. Figuring they were already going to be ensconced in the studio recording Richard III, Gatekeeper decided to waste no time in pulling the Grey Maiden EP together, providing their fans with an early 2019 treat. The title track finds Gatekeeper at their melodic best, showcasing the band s penchant for twin guitar harmonies as well as the impressive range of Jean-Pierre, who ably weaves between heavy, complex riffing. In fact, Jean-Pierre s work on Grey Maiden, Tale of Twins and Richard III, showcase a vocalist now coming into his own, something that Blackwell attests to the pair s deep well of ideas and constant flow of communication between the band s home base of Vancouver and Jean-Pierre s current locale of Portland, Oregon. Blackwell, the consummate riff and melody writer, JP, a vocalist who likes to think outside of the box, are often looking for unique rhythmic patterns to suit his versatile vocals. The songwriting serve-and-volley between the two paid quick dividends on East of Sun and only gets better here, especially when Gatekeeper explores the challenging terrain of Richard III. In fact, the members of Gatekeeper are more apt to drop obscure metal references then they are to vouch for the scene s more prominent bands. Blackwell considers it to be their bread and butter, born from the never-ending desire to find bands off the beaten path who could offer something new and vibrant to influence Gatekeeper s sound. This pursuit of individualism is one of Gatekeeper s defining traits they easily elude many of melodic and power metal s stylistic trappings on both East of Sun and Grey Maiden. The new year will find Gatekeeper hitting Europe with labelmates Sanhedrin in addition to hunkering down with a brand-new batch of songs for an eventual sophomore full-length release. Swedish doom/death dealer VANHA returns with a new album Melancholia , the follow-up of their incredible debut, Within the Mist of Sorrow. The band has again teamed up with Black Lion Records for the release of this album. Melancholia will see its worldwide release on digipak CD and digitally this December 30, 2018. VANHA was brought into existence as a side-project of the Swedish multi-instrumentalist Jan Johansson (from the band Frostvang). Jan s purpose was to explore the bleakest, darkest and heaviest of sounds in the field of doom/death that was pioneered by seminal acts like Anathema, My Dying Bride and Katatonia. Jan was soon joined by the drummer Jesse Oinas and the duo soon recorded the debut, Within the Mist of Sorrow, which came out in the year 2016 via Black Lion Records. Ever since the departure of Jesse in 2017, Jan has been solely sailing the ship of VANHA. He alone took care of all the tasks related to compositions and vocals. The title Melancholia itself is an apt indicator of the subject-matter and the audial-features of this six-track opus; each profusely illustrated with a twister of melody driven mournful sections, led by both deep guttural growls and clean vocals. The music ranges over the unfathomable part of the human beings, where one starts to harbor darkness, melancholy and mystery upon losing a companion or a close one. The trio quickly gathered in a local rehearsal room to write songs in preparation for the show, thinking all along the band would be short-lived. But, to their surprise, more gigs followed, as did second guitarist Jendrik Seiler. Soon, their debut EP, Wanted, was released in 2009, followed up by 2011's Don't Touch While Running. However, leading up to the creation of their 2013 album Heavy Metal, Kuri and Jilge had a revelation while watching Iron Maiden's Beast Over Hammersmith live video. The conviction in which Bruce Dickinson sings, the energy of the band and the charisma they displayed while on stage needed to be followed in Booze Control. Prior, Booze Control was riding the somewhat clichéd boozed-out rock band angle a bit too hard with their first releases. While the songs were there, the delivery wasn't, so the band made a concerted effort to improve their songwriting and stage presentation for Heavy Metal. They succeeded in doing so, setting them on a path for the ensuing 2016 The Lizard Rider album and their latest and first LP for Gates of Hell Records, Forgotten Lands. Forgotten Lands finds Booze Control successfully bridging the gap between NWOBHM and old-school American and European metal. The band also parlays more serious lyrical content into songs that are filled with spiraling melodies, driving rhythms and catchy vocal lines from Kuri. The band's songwriting diversity is on display with Of the Deep as well as Attack of the Axeman, songs that peddle an epic flair with a classic metal foundation. While the songs were there, the delivery wasn't, so the band made a concerted effort to improve their songwriting and stage presentation for Heavy Metal. They succeeded in doing so, setting them on a path for the ensuing 2016 The Lizard Rider album and their latest and first LP for Gates of Hell Records, Forgotten Lands. Forgotten Lands finds Booze Control successfully bridging the gap between NWOBHM and old-school American and European metal. The band also parlays more serious lyrical content into songs that are filled with spiraling melodies, driving rhythms and catchy vocal lines from Kuri. The band's songwriting diversity is on display with Of the Deep as well as Attack of the Axeman, songs that peddle an epic flair with a classic metal foundation. Now ten years into their career, Booze Control has already gone well beyond their humble origins and party-time ethos. Everybody knows Lightforce as the predecessor to Mortification, the Australian death/thrash band fronted by Lightforce bassist Steve Rowe. However, Lightforce was a totally different beast, heavily influenced by the early 80's metal of bands like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. Rowe s driving bass lines emulating Steve Harris, combined with Murray Adams adept guitar playing and Errol Willenberg s technical drumming are homage to the bands that inspired them, while still putting their own spin on the style. The quality musicianship on display here didn t go unnoticed either, seeing them gain support slots for the likes of Stryper, Whitecross and Leviticus, but this line-up didn t see the year out and their follow-up album, though written, was never recorded. A new line-up, a new style, new songs... and Mortification was born! Hailing from Neuchâtel in Switzerland, Euclidean is acting since 2010. They deploy a progressive Black metal that focuses on the creation of bitter and somber feelings, breeding black, hypnotic atmospheres, enriched with doom and sludge metal rhythms. The album illustrates four conceptions of the universe, from its creation and to its ruin. The first one develops a strictly pagan, Pythagorean, view. The second consists in a Christian exposition of the transmigration of the souls, their origin and their destiny, mixed with pagan features, as in Macrobius’ Commentary upon Scipio's Dream. The third is a medieval lecture of the World’s end, mainly based upon the Book of Revelation. The last one digs a neo-pagan theory, this one containing a reflection about the Christian decadent cosmology.

In this digital age where everybody is interconnected to the point of saturation, it s getting harder and harder to shy away from the public eye and let the ancient magic do its thing. Yet GRIMOIRE DE OCCULTE have been pretty good at it: formed in the early 10 s in Aachen, they ve managed so far to keep a on purpose low profile, with only scattered and limited releases and four live shows only. But in 2017, a more widely available and professional split EP with Peruvians doom masters MIRTHLESS paved the way for a new and exciting chapter... Even to the chosen few who knew the band from before, Wisdow of the Dead will come as a surprise. The trio always had a taste for the epic but as spearheaded by the super limited and daring 2017 rehearsal demo Ritual Before Thy Fullmoon (a 27 minutes long instrumental drums/synth duel!), their first proper album reaches an almost ritual sense of foreboding, as if with it the listener was treading on uncharted, solemn yet majestic territories. And this is no accident, considering the slow process that gave birth to GRIMOIRE DE OCCULTE. The band has always been about bordering to the other side, the afterlife and building a bridge between dreams, death and the occult concedes their founding member and drummer, Baal. Many things come to me in dreams. That s where I found the band s name and also where I envisioned our very first recording, more in a drone and ritual vein. I originally was on my own and talked about that concept with a longtime friend of mine, frontman Philsoph. He took he photo I ended up using for our first demo cover, done in a local cemetery with a small lake at its center, with the water symbolizing the inter connection in between the land of the living and the land of the dead. We had such a good connection that I asked him to join and later on, we recruited Viator Noctis on guitar and bass as he shared the same interests. Now a real band , they focused more on their death metal roots, citing respected signatures such as ANTHROPOMORPHIA, ETERNAL DARKNESS, DEAD CONGREGATION OR NECROS CHRISTOS as influences, as well as some more obscure ambient and ritual acts. This being said, as the five tracks (plus one intro) featured on the album will testify, there s no room here for any complex nor bizarre arrangements. Some will even probably deem GRIMOIRE DE OCCULTE as too primitive as their music crawls more than it obliterates. Far from saturating the listener s ears with a relentless assault, Wisdow of the Dead is doomy and creepy. Like a curse you can t really escape and that growing sense of unease when you first deal with occult forces... In the end, why run when you know that no matter what, death will welcome you in its cold arms no matter what? Hence a very stern musical approach, with repetitive riffs and growled chanting that feel like ancient incantations presiding over forbidden rites. Down to its songs titles ( Rotten Flowers , Necromantic Invocation etc.), everything on this album is set to glorify this special tie linking this world to the other. The songs are on purpose quite epic yet don t bother challenging the listeners, instead it s all about putting forth a trance-like form of aggression. The album s intro s quite revelatory as the you re feeling like stepping by mistake in some kind of hidden chamber with walls covered by magical symbols and where some ancient ritual is being conducted before the sludgy guitars of Below the Ground do, indeed, take you... Somewhere else for a 44 minutes trip. No wonder then that the album s artwork, designed by no less that Italian master Paolo Girardi, is following the same red thread. In ancient Rome and Greece, necromancy was a very common ritual.
