"Stage1 at Roadburn 2012 was already overcrowded when Conan entered (with their gear through the audience) and laid down an hour of ‚Horseback battle doom‘. ‘The band were in obviously ebullient form, stoked at playing this legendary festival and also being asked to join Sleep in Oslo, as selections from the new and monstrous ‘Monnos’ were intermingled with the huge and bulldozing force of classics like ‘Krull’ and ‘Older Than Earth’. Jon’s instantly likeable faraway vocals have never sounded more realised to these ears, and the audience were massively appreciative of Conan’s true wallop as the Stonehenge of amps that framed the band belched out universe-sized slices of ultra low-end hostility. A special mention too for Paul O’Neil’s expert drumming which represents the kind of versatility and intelligence that one would not usually expect with this most primal of genres, truly adding colour to the palette. By the end of the set I had cunningly worked my way into the centre of the room and believe me I was not regretful of the deoxygenated crush of Stage 01 – Conan had finally arrived on the international stage like the great wrecking ball that they have always been and I needed to be there to witness their special Roadburn moment. New band by Pentagram guitar wizard Victor Griffin, with guest musicians from Goatsnake, Pentagram, Place of Skulls….
While closing the books on Pentagram and Place of Skulls in 2012, Victor Griffin invited drummer Pete Campbell to join him in the studio to record a new album. With no name, no members, and a batch of unfinished material… they cranked out 8 tracks in just under a week and Pete went home. But much was left unfinished. An invitation was then extended to some of the best bass players around with Guy Pinhas, Ron Holzner, Greg Turley, Marty Swaney, and Dan Lively accepting. Meanwhile, keyboardist Mike Puleo was making his contribution. Then with great enthusiasm… the timing was right for Jeff “Oly” Olson to join and bring the Hammond organ alive on the rest of the album!

High Priest of Saturn is a psychedelic doom band from Trondheim, Norway. The idea was born in early 2011, and a two-track demo was released in August 2011. Dean Allen Foyd is a Stockholm based psychedelic band with a wide range of music styles. Everything from garage, delta blues, folk and space-rock can be heard in their music. With influences like Syd Barrett’s Pink Floyd and The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band you know you’re in for a serious psychedelic treat.
On stage Dean Allen Foyd plays a different set at each concert during which the songs change their arrangements, spontaneous improvisations alternate with lengthy organ and guitar solos and Canada-native singer and guitar player Francis Rencoret moves like a dervish in trance on stage.

Annie Lewandowski comes from Minnesota, a place full of things that are long and longer: church services, dinner tables, and worry lines, to name a few. Somebody said there are ten thousand lakes there; if that’s true, each of them shows up in some little way in Annie’s songs. She writes under the name Powerdove, which began as a band of one in California in 2007. A document of this brief solo era can be found on her EP Live from the Maybeck House (s/r, 2010). Before long, powerdove evolved into three; that trio (with Alex Vittum, percussion, and Jason Hoopes, bass) recorded Be Mine in 2009 (Circle into Square, 2010).
On her new album, Do you Burn?, many of the songs were written along the scuzzy River Itchen in Hampshire, England, where Annie played concerts and went on the occasional European tour with Curtis McKinney, a laptop composer who uses Supercollider. After this year spent down by the sea, she returned to the US, settling in upstate New York and writing the rest of the material on the new album. When it came time to record, Annie enlisted the help of an old California friend, John Dieterich (Deerhoof), and a new French one, Thomas Bonvalet (L’Ocelle Mare). Three great improvisers, they worked fast. The result lies somewhere near the Marble Index, David Sylvian, Diane Cluck, and the Curtains (of which Annie is a former member). The roughness and fluidity of these tracks owe to their origin in mostly live takes, which have also lent a certain intima- cy to every sound: these are little songs to love, but there is also great mystery here, and even menace.

Julien Fernandez of Africantape met Micah in october 2011 in New York after his long time friend Kevin Shea told him he had around 14 hours recordings of unreleased material of the trio at home. Julien was interested to hear everything and to release an album on the label. Then, after everyone agreed, It took a year to build this album, select the songs and do the artwork.

Recorded at the San Francisco Theological Seminary’s own Montgomery Chapel, acid-folk-rock psychedelic gem Search Party “Montgomery Chapel” was the brainchild of (then Reverend) Nicholas Freund. Having left Wisconsin in the late 1960s to join a burgeoning West Coast religious scene, Freund spent considerable time in Sacramento before making their way to San Francisco in 1968 to lay down this one-off with some students of his. The result is a spooky, metaphysical trip that’s equal parts God and acid-dripped mind expansion. Laced with haunting vocals and dreamlike passages, Montgomery Chapel is psychedelic music at its most evocative, and most spiritual. Original copies (only 600 were pressed on the custom Century label) carry substantial price tags.

Some came to make records. Others did not leave any recorded evidence—they have been reduced (at best) to the testimony of a blurred photograph in an old magazine. But it was a generation of bands from Chile which gave shape to a stream of permeating rock, beat, folk and psychedelia music influences radiating from the “first world.” And on that list of pioneers of Chilean rock, Los Vidrios Quebrados (the Broken Glass) are unanimously considered as the greatest. They had a certain intellectual arrogance. For the language squeamish—the song titles are in Spanish, but the songs are in English. The band considered that rock 'n' roll could only be sung in English and refused to sing in their native language, arguing that a cueca (the Chilean national dance) could not be sung in English. They also made their own instruments—creating their own guitars and amplifiers from furniture and loudspeakers. On one guitar, they replaced a pick-up with a record player needle. It gave an extraordinary sound. That sort of creativity flows freely throughout the music on their only album, the nowlegendary “Fictions” (RCA Victor/UES, 1967). The LP is an excellent collection of songs, recorded in just nine hours), with intimations of psychedelic rock amidst the influence of bands like The Byrds, The Beatles and The Kinks (with nods to Bach and the classics), all while maintaining a fresh beat sound; "Fictions" is an album that can compare with the best works of psychedelic pop bands from England and America. Los Vidrios Quebrados is one of a handful of Chilean groups to receive attention around the world; and their songs ‘Oscar Wilde’ and ‘Fictions’ are considered among the all-time best tracks in South American rock history. We’re pleased to kick off our forthcoming series of crucial Chilean reissues with this bi-lingual, 32-page booklet, which explores the story of Los Vidrios Quebrados in the context of the rich Chilean rock music scene.

It was—and is—almost impossible to categorize Vera Sienra’s musical style, but we’ll try: wistful songs with the world-weariness of Fado, the gravel throated delivery of Marlene Dietrich, and the pulsating sadness of the bossa nova. Vera's unique tone of voice and the softness of her guitar, have always been an unmistakable trademark. Listening to the songs of "Nuestra Soledad" (Our Solitude), Vera’s debut album from 1969, few people believed that those mature melodies were created by the beautiful and timid blonde who could be seen on their black & white TVs. Iconoclastic genius Eduardo Mateo was working for the Vik label as an arranger and studio musician; he added his guitar playing and arranging skills to the album. Vera recorded her second album, “Vera” (1972) in Buenos Aires, with the direction and arrangements of Roberto Lar, and the valuable help of recording engineer/guru, Carlos Piriz. Both legendary albums are included on this release. “In Uruguay, in the south, where sleeps or sways a river as wide as the sea, there is a small country. There is a neighborhood for anyone who has lived in it, and take its mirage forever as the way of seeing the world. Punta Carretas and Punta Brava, the southernmost point of Montevideo—it knows Vera Sienra from her first breath. The songs were born from her, or the landscape, the solitude that is always inhabited by metaphors, which have to do with this country which measures changes in sadness, as the seasons pass. Hence the authenticity of all of them, a striking sensuality that brings something of the sea to the voice of a little girl, sometimes tired as if extracted out of a very dark interior. Vera is her song, a perpetual unity.”

Even though this was the first official full-length recorded by Paul Speckmann - backed up by the soon to be cult line-up of former DEATH STRIKE comrade Chris Mittleburn on guitar and Bill Schmidt on drums – MASTER were already a revered name in the underground. Although very few recordings of theirs existed, as rough sounding as they were, those gems had already achieved legendary status. Distributed through the tapetrading infamous network by guys still in their late teens who would soon prove to be as equally important for the rise of the extreme metal scene such as Shaun Glass (future BROKEN HOPE and SINDROME), Mick Harris (NAPALM DEATH) or Chuck Schuldiner (DEATH), they basically single-handed launched the basis of things to come and for zillions of bands throughout the world to follow. So when the future German mammoth label NUCLEAR BLAST finally ended up signing the band in 1989, all they had to was to dig back in the great collection of songs which had never been properly recorded. Packed with songs still legendary to this day (“Pay To Die”, “Funeral Bitch” or the instrumental “Terrorizer”) and a storming rendition of BLACK SABBATH’s “Children Of The Grave”, MASTER self-titled album is still, hands down more than two decades (!) after its initial release, one of death-metal ‘desert island’ album. Recorded at Solid Sounds in Illinois but mixed at the already high-profiled Morrisound Studio facility in Tampa Florida by Scott Burns who had already left his stamp on such milestones as NAPALM DEATH (‘Harmony’ Corruption’), DEATH (‘Leprosy’) or DEICIDE (‘Deicide’), it is now available again on vinyl format for the first time in twenty years, with the usual DOOMENTIA high-standard policy. So “strike your idols down/and wear the Master’s crown” goddamn it!

In the middle of the now quite epic discography of MASTER, ‘On The Seventh Day, God Created… Master’ always stood out like some kind of bizarre sore thumb. Released in 1991 at the height of the death-metal popularity and recorded at the then mandatory Morrisound studios in Florida with of course Mr Scott Burns seated the producer’s chair, this was meant to be the band ‘breakthrough’ album. But as usual with Paul Speckmann and co.s, fate intervened and this wasn’t meant to be, even though if in the end, it sold more than 25,000 copies in its first year alone. It nevertheless remains a favourite among fans, not only because it features the track “Heathen” but also because it is the band only recording with Paul Masdival from CYNIC (who was barely twenty years old back then) on guitar, who was called upon at the 11th after former sixstringer Jim Martinelli was fired by their manager only to days after arriving in Florida! It also sees John Tardy from OBITUARY guesting on two tracks plus former one time MORBID ANGEL bass player John Ortega doing leads on “Whose Left To Decide” and is overall maybe the closest MASTER had ever been to become a full-on death-metal machine. But by the time Speckmann had hired two new members and got set to record its follow-up ‘Collection Of Souls’, their sound had once again shifted to a much more in-your-face and punkish sound. But that’s another story…

Yellow Sunshine Explosion was a German Neo Psychedelic Band founded 1981.
Their style changed from the 60’s garage beat to a completely own sound- and rhythm-structures, which never existed before (or later) in this way. In the room of the drummer they built up the studio with a 4-track-tape recorder and they spent a lot of time by creating their own sound-worlds. This way, amongst others, the legendary own produced demo tape developed which, although only 1000 pieces have been published, reached an absolutely cult status. Despite of overwhelming critic and numberous gigs not much happened, thus the band split in 1992. The drummer moved to Cologne, where he a.o. still is playing music with Damo Suzuki and did a US-tour in 1998. Afterwards he played drums at Michael Karolis‘ CAN-Soloproject until his death in November 2001.
