The list of Roadburn performers over the years is a veritable who s who of underground heavy culture, with everyone from Neurosis and Sleep to Godflesh having performed at the event. Syntheosis the commissioned piece was prepared at the request of the festival and performed there in April 2018 in front of over 3000 people. Syntheosis the album is not a live recording but a carefully prepared studio interpretation, on which the ten musicians worked over the spring and summer of 2018. There surely aren’t many bands that can lay claim to being the primary (or, indeed, only) exponents of an entire genre – but psychedelic legends Omnia Opera can, because, well, they invented it. Back in the early 1980’s, when the GB free festival scene was still some years from its zenith, and the second wave of psychedelic bands that would accompany it were still just a metaphorical blotter on the tongues of their founding members, some friends from Kidderminster, UK hit upon the idea of ‘plasma rock’. Taking elements of a variety of mind-expanding and progressive music, they distilled them into a uniquely potent and energetic style. Incorporating searing punk-edged acid rock with cutting-edge interstellar synthesis & sampling, and largely staying away from the meandering jams that had mostly taken over the psychedelic form, they preferred instead well-observed politically-edged, socially-conscious and cosmically-inclined lyrics alongside powerful arrangements. Over the next ten years or so, the band would release several albums – initially on cassette only, recorded and distributed by themselves, and selling out time and time again, and later on CD & vinyl courtesy of the legendary Delerium Records (home, at the time, for Steven Wilson’s Porcupine Tree project amongst others). Then, just as it looked as if the band might be making progress into a wider awareness, they split up.Fast-forward to 2006, and the band decided to get together to do a 20th anniversary gig…one thing led to another, and for the next four years they toiled ceaselessly writing and recording what was to become their magnum opus, the album ‘Nothing is Ordinary’. Originally self-released as a double CD to a rapturous reception, it is only now that Greek psych label Sound-Effect Records, great fans of the band themselves, have got behind a mammoth triplevinyl edition. Meticulously remastered for vinyl by Mark Cawthra at The Infallible Ear, and with packaging to match the original CD release (a stunning triplegatefold sleeve, with printed inserts to house the vinyl), no expense or trouble has been spared to make this limited edition vinyl an absolute essential for any lover of psychedelic music or acid rock.

A truly legendary name in London’s Sixties and Seventies Psychedelic scene, TWINK - a.k.a. John Alder – has been a member of The Pink Fairies, The Pretty Things and Tomorrow, before having a solo career that lasts to this very day. His most know song is probably “10,000 Words In A Cardbord Box”, now released as a single vinyl 45 rpm, backed with Zion De Gallier’s Mellotron-driven “Geraldine”, with Twink on drums. The A-side is a neat and authentic version, recorded in 1999 in LA at Westwood Studios, featuring members of The Brian Jones Massacre and Smallstone, the latter serving at that time as Twink’s backing band and performing live songs from his legendary Think Pink album. The flip side, “Geraldine”, is an enjoyable Kinksy number, recorded at Abbey Road Studios in 1968, graced by Mark Wirtz ‘ Popsike production. Zion De Gallier was in fact Douglas Robert Ord, lead singer of Colchester band’ The Deep Beats, as well as The Fairies. This limited edition of 300 numbered copies comes with an interview insert and a nice artwork by Alessandra Monoriti. An instant-collector number for sure!

Since its first apparition on the infamous “Chosen Few” compilation album way back in 1983, the Mods Garage anthem “I Give You An Inch (And You Take A Mile)” has been included in the Garage Punk Hall Of Fame as one of the prime example of the so called Sixties Punk, “a snarling, attitude-laden supreme put down”, to quote Tim Warren, the Crypt Records oncho, the man that, along with Greg Shaw Of Bomp!/Vox Records before him, has been a true force behind the resurrection of the genre in its purest and crudest form. The Mods were thee classic Garage group that cut only one single in 1966 before disappearing into the mist of time. Since the inclusion of both sides of their solely record in other compilations like the well known “Back From The Grave” the band has gained an incredible following. Its equally cool flip side “You’ve Got Another Think Coming” is another winner and both sides are perfect movers for a Sixties Garage DJ set! Finally in 2003 one of the former member of the band, bassist Larry Smith turned up with the full story and an indepth interview came out on Misty Lane Magazine. A good decade on and this single finally sees a top-fidelity reissue. Liner notes by Tim Warren, a fantastic mastering thanks to Mark Taylor studio and a picture sleeve that was never pressed in its original form complete the whole, along with a 4 pages reprint of the Misty Lane 18 interview. First physical release for "Dronecaine", the Opium Eyes Of Nico full album! Released on limited edition vinyl via Sound Effect Records of Athens, this is a psychedelic masterpiece straight from the future! Featuring drone renditions of Beatles and Syd Barrett tracks. Opium Eyes of Nico is a psychedelic project with two persons - Artyom Yegorov and Viktoria Perova (both play in Cosmic Letdown at the same time). The history of Opium Eyes of Nico began in year of 2009 when Artyom just started to recording music. “I had to came up with the name for my home recording sessions, - says Artyom. - Exactly at that time i was addicted (listening) to Nico. One day i stumbled upon a James Young interview about Nico in which he characterized her as follows: “She had a heavy heart. And an opium eyes”. So there was the name. And a few recordings”. It was an intimate music of a one person. Artyom was trying to play psychedelic music, to record demos and covers of his influences and to develop his own style in the genre of psychedelia. After that the initial idea of the project was frozen because somehow it transformed in completely different band, Cosmic Letdown. Everything changed after Viktoria joined Artem in 2014. She shared the same passion in music and had identical tastes in it. The idea of a revival was in the air after Viktoria draw a pencil logo of Opium Eyes of Nico just for fun. It led to a series of drone-like jamming sessions in C between recording first and second Cosmic Letdown albums. Later Artyom got deeper into the concept of an album, jams started to take a shape, became a songs one by one, got a richer sound palette. And Viktoria started to develop artwork for the future Dronecaine and the whole aesthetics behind that phenomenon. She joined to the sound production with Artyom and performed as a singer on two songs. “Dronecaine was recorded in the summer of 2014 like this: we were just recording tracks at our pleasure and suddenly (as if by magic) was born the concept of a drone album, which did not fit in Cosmic Letdown. So it was decided to revive Opium Eyes of Nico and to make an album of these tracks and to name it Dronecaine. The thing of this album is that almost all the guitars are tuned in the way to be in tune with sitar. In addition to everything we decided to make two covers of the songs we love in the same sitar-esque Indian way”. The first single was released in October 2014, in November 2014 it was formed the home label based on the name of the project - Opium Eyes Records and the Dronecaine was released on it in February 2015. It can be said that Opium Eyes of Nico completely preferred detached psychedelic sound in comparison with Cosmic Letdown and an outsider philosophy.

His debut was the EP “Love & Other Misdemeanors”, and it was followed by his first full length album with the Huckleberries “And The Ghosts In Between”, which was enthusiastically received by critics and fans alike. Robert Sin started playing the piano at the age of six and the guitar around the age of 14. He started writing and recording songs at the age of 15 in his bedroom in Arta, a Greek Midwestern city.

Sonora Sunrise is a Russian band from Altai. Altai is a sacred land of ancient mountains that are still keeping secrets and old shamanic rites. The culture and wild nature of this land inspires the musicians. Sonora Sunrise music is transparent and light, like the wind blowing from the mountains. Sometimes it is merciless, like a storm in the desert. All tracks on the album were recorded in just two days in 2016 with all the members participating as during rehearsals. Later the musicians added some more guitar, synthesizers, and the vocals. This is why the recording sounds live--a large part of it are improvisation and the flight of imagination. Alive With Scars is an album that explores the life long struggle of living with Multiple Sclerosis. MS is an autoimmune disease where the body's own immune system attacks and destroys healthy tissue, in the case of MS, the healthy tissue is myelin, the protein that insulates the nerves in the spinal cord, brain and optic nerve gradually destroying the myelin that coats the central nervous system. Your body slowly beings wasting from the inside out by the subversion of its own central nervous system. A body that with the passing of time will waste and wither to its own unique sonnet of pain and torment. I personally have lived with MS for almost 10 years and, this album has been an on again, off again affair for almost as long. Did I even want to do this? Will people understand it? It has been a difficult subject to approach and express musically. Yet I found I had been subconsciously doing it all along. From the formidably depressing album Aokigahara to the melancholic spitefulness of Love Like Blood. The narratives represented in these albums were backed by the way my MS affected me and the people around me. Having independently issued their 2016 Coalition of the Anathematized split with Church of Void and Acolytes of Moros, Cardinals Folly was hoping to find a willing label partner for their next split venture. They found one in Cruz Del Sur Music, who agreed to release the split on vinyl, one of Cardinals Folly s criteria. One of the bands at the top of Cardinals Folly's list was Australia s Lucifer s Fall, who were also fresh off of an independently-released split of their own with Reclvse. Realizing the possibilities, Cardinals Folly and Lucifer s Fall teamed up for a split that finds both bands contributing three songs each. Originally formed in 2004 as The Coven, Cardinals Folly came into being in 2007 in Helsinki, where they proceeded to release their debut Heretic s Hangover EP in 2008. The Orthodox Faces EP followed a year later, culminating in the release of their first full-length, 2011 s Such Power is Dangerous! The ensuing Our Cult Continues! (2014) and Holocaust of Ecstasy & Freedom (2016) furthered the Finns doom cause, running up to Deranged Pagan Sons. Inspired by the idea of creating a smaller release, Cardinals Folly decided to maintain a running thread of Nordic mysticism through their three offerings on the split. While the Finns had dabbled in this subject matter on previous albums, here, they made it a priority, starting with the doom waltz of Walvater Unveiled and into the trance-like Spiritual North. Rounding things off is the ten-minute Sworn Through Odin s & Satan s Blood, which is Cardinals Folly s distinctive ode to Hammerheart-era Bathory. The band's debut album titled "Dromers", was firmly rooted in the fertile soil cultivated by Drudkh, Primordial or even Agalloch, nevertheless built its own aura. Excellent reviews at the press, whilst also garnering end of year list entries and other critical accolades along the way, hailed Fluisteraars as one of the new potent stalwarts of Dutch black metal. Blending the welcoming, epic affair of their debut with more harsh and biting effort's more reminiscent of 90s black metal, Luwte captures the band from a slightly different, yet none less qualitative angle. While the band had already shown their effective vigour with time stretching melodic and edgy grandeur, this second album is very much the more ferocious finished extension to it. An unpolished yet elaborate production with final mastering duties taken over by Patrick W. Engel at TEMPLE OF DISHARMONY perfectly suits the dynamic, intelligent nature of the music. Even though much has been written and recorded when it comes to extreme metal, Fluisteraars are quite extraordinary in their way of arranging and presenting music. With vast influences concerning the ambience and atmospheric aspects of their craft the Dutch trinity is not to be easily stuck in just one plain direction. The early on forged term "Windswept Black Metal" recalling imagery of rain, decay, bleakness and intoxication still to date embodies their own amalgamation of intriguing, atmospheric music.

For over a decade, Fen have steadily developed into one of the most intriguing bands within the UK black metal scene. Often bracketed in with the post black metal or shoegaze black metal movements, Fen s sound is actually unique to themselves a startling fusion of searing, aggressive extremity, progressive daring and glacial, ambient beauty. Starting out with a pastoral form of atmospheric black metal on their acclaimed The Malediction Fields debut from 2009, across five full-length albums Fen s sound has expanded and diversified considerably to embrace a number of different elements all honed and synthesised into a distinctive, captivating soundscape. This culminated in the colossal Winter album which was released in 2017. In late 2015, the band recorded a three-track EP entitled Stone and Sea which was a deliberate hearken back to their older sound whilst still retaining the maturity the band had developed across the years. The intention was to record something for themselves , to escape from the album cycle for a time and work on a self-contained piece. The three tracks therefore present a conceptual narrative relating to the coastlines of Eastern England. Here, the sea claws at the landscape on a daily basis, dragging earth, houses and even churches beneath the waves. These evocative, crumbling coastlines were the inspiration for the material on this EP. Musically, Stone & Sea delivers a more direct approach to the Fen sound whilst also incorporating elements of traditional folk music and fusing it with a definite touch of the epic . Originally released on CD as part of a split in 2016, Eisenwald now proudly present this unique recording as a limited-edition vinyl MLP. Fans of the band s earlier works such as Ancient Sorrow will find much to appreciate here whilst those admire the band s more recent releases will doubtless enjoy a more immediate interpretation of the Fen sound. Dark-Prog act STONE LEADERS came to life in early 2016 when renowned drummer John Macaluso (of ARK, Yngwie Malmsteen, TNT, Symphony X, James LaBrie, Labyrinth and Michael Romeo) was contracted to do a drum clinic in Zagreb, Croatia. Asking the clinic organizer to find a band to accompany him in the clinic, Macaluso then met guitarist Ivan Mihaljevic and bassist Marko Karacic of Croatian band Side Effects ten minutes before the clinic began and decided on what they would play. The start of the clinic (now basically a full-fledged gig) was the Deep Purple classic Burn and it brought the house down. Right then, the trio knew they had something special here so when New Yorker John went back to Italy (where he now lives) he contacted Ivan and plans were made to get together to begin working on the debut STONE LEADERS album. Mausoleum Gate drummer Oskari Räsänen goes on a throwback metal trip through time with first Iron Griffin LP, Curse of the Sky. Already known for his work in Mausoleum Gate, multi-instrumentalist Oskari Räsänen steps out on his own with his Iron Griffin classic metal project. The band s first full-length Curse of the Sky finds Iron Griffin exploring the vast terrain of proto-metal with an added twist: New vocalist Maija Tiljander. Enjoying a rare break from his main band, Mausoleum Gate, multi-instrumentalist Oskari Räsänen set a goal for himself: Finish an Iron Griffin album before the end of 2018. As the months started to tick away, he decided to spend all of July locked in a rehearsal room composing and fine-tuning his new compositions. Whereas the rest of his fellow Finnish countrymen were enjoying the long days of sunshine, warm weather and the proverbial trip to the sauna, Räsänen saw nothing but four walls and the various notes he kept while composing all by himself. By the fall of 2018, Räsänen emerged with Iron Griffin s first-ever full-length album, the seven-song Curse of the Sky, a true classic metal throwback to the time when organic sounds and climatic songwriting reigned supreme. Iron Griffin s self-titled 2017 EP saw Räsänen joined by vocalist Toni Pentikäinen. However, his new songs needed a different approach and feel. Enter female vocalist Maija Tiljander. A gifted rock singer, Tiljander was given the task of taking Räsänen s lyrical themes of fantasy, swords and sorcery with some medieval twists and adhering to his often weird and difficult vocal melodies. Tiljander pulled it off in the span of two days in the studio, no less, adding a new dimension to Iron Griffin s sound on standout numbers like Reign of Thunder and Lost Legion and Dawn of Struggle. As Räsänen is quick to admit, the songs on Curse of the Sky were created in a vacuum. Since Iron Griffin is strictly his project and does not involve additional band members, Räsänen has to trust in his songwriting instincts. The seven songs found on the album are a combination of trial and error, with Räsänen sometimes creating a new arrangement simply on the basis of a drum improvisation or from melodies and riffs he assembled over time. In spite of his singular songwriting approach, the songs on Curse of the Sky are multi-dimensional, taking the listener on a journey through the realms of 70s-inspired proto metal, where Räsänen s progressive leanings merge with his love for allegory and storytelling. The all-consuming process of creating Curse of the Sky left Räsänen drained by the album s completion. However, as the saying goes, the journey is often the reward. Also, I worked together with some of my favorite singers Stanislav Govorukha (Suffer Yourself) and Hekjal (Ad Cinerem), featured on the first two songs of the album. The biggest difference to "Funeral Impressions" is the sound, which got a lot better and which pushes the dark and cold atmosphere. The theme for the album is extinction, like the title says. Behind every legend, there's always a tiny bit of truth. While it's obviously still open to debate how much credit one must give to the Buckriders mythos - or 'Bokkenrijders' in their native tongue, the various gangs of thieves or who kept under their thumb the southern part of Holland throughout the 18th century by pretending they had signed a pact with the Devil and rode through the cold northern sky on the back of flying goats - it's still make one hell of story. And the prefect setting for an extreme metal album such as RITUALS OF THE DEAD HAND debut, Blood Oath... This brand new band was put together by two members of Belgian instrumental post-rockers Hemelbestormer, on Vàn Records. After the latter was done writing for their second album, their guitarist Filip Dupont felt the urge to dwell back in the same type of epic black/death genre his former band GORATH had became famed for, especially on their final album The Chronicles of Khiliasmos released in 2012. Recorded throughout 2017 and mastered by Patrick Engel at the Temple of Disharmony studio, Blood Oath is like the audio equivalent of famous 1922 Swedish silent movie Häxan about witchcraft. Far from our now computerized and PC-controlled society, with its four lengthy tracks (ranging from nine to eleven minutes) and very cinematic interlude ('The Gathering') and doomish passages, it takes the listener back into an age where superstition and local folklore still permeated all those small religious communities, with the story being told from the Buckriders' perspective. Actually, the cover artwork is a custom made painting of and old tree nearby their hometown where the vilains were said to gather around before launching another of their killing spree. So, truth or legend? Simple folklore or further proof that the Devil is always lurking somewhere in the shadow, especially behind man's vilest deeds? Whatever your answer is, one thing is sure: with Blood Oath, the Buckriders will ride again!
