Once more a great trip back in time; sounds of Thin Lizzy, The Free and AC/DC are gathered together again on this second album by Stone Axe. The debut album of this band, which was loaded with top quality early seventies rock with balls rocked a lot of socks off. The debut album was kind of a hobby project of Tony Reed and Dru Brinkerhoff, who could freely express some nostalgic creativity. Every riff and vocal line felt very intense and straight from the heart. Again, with tracks like ‘We Know It’s Still Rock ‘n’Roll’ they bring a great mix of AC/DC and The Sweet, and the song ‘On With The Show’ could also have appeared on a Black Crowes album. Also obvious influences of Thin Lizzy (‘Those Were The Golden Days’), The Free (‘Live For The Day’ and ‘Aint Gonna Miss It’) and even Procol Harum (‘Turned To Stone’ could also have been called ‘Turned To Whiter Shade Of Pale’) are available on Stone Axe II.

Til Your Feet Bleed was largely written under a tree in the Utah Canyons, within the shadows of notorious train and bank robber, Butch Cassidy’s favoured hideout. Informed by the imagery of William Faulkner and Flannery O’Connor’s Southern prose, Apollo’s music also recalls Ennio Morricone’s spaghetti-western themes, all grizzled with a Tom Waitsian fervour, and the lush, warming tones of Richard Hawley. It’s a curious combination of inflences, but it just works.
Opening on the clip-clop lament of ‘Oil On A Trashcan Fire’ (a sound recalled on ‘No East No West’), Apollo introduces his cultured croon on ‘For Now’, a solitary song that cries bitter of isolation whilst the beautiful optimism of ‘How Hard’ is imbued with a familiar jazz-informed waltz, tipping a travelled Stetson to Charles Mingus. The 11 tracks of ‘Til Your Feet Bleed take in the emotions, both fleeting and fundamental that document the bittersweet, cinematic legacy of Apollo’s ongoing journey - Americana at its most romantically sunset-strewn and desolate.

It’s generally accepted amongst the Cleveland cognoscenti that Easter Monkeys were the best rock ‘n’ roll band calling the city home in the early to mid 1980’s. The band played a defining role in the hardcore scene of the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, turning out furious tunes at breakneck tempos and whipping crowds nationwide into a fine froth before calling it quits in 1993. This career spanning retrospective containing 31 songs plus an insane DVD of various live performances, photos and whatnot proves once again that you can’t go wrong with Cleveland. Pistol Whip was the first ever punk band from Erie, PA, and their lone 7-inch on Endangered Species, released in 1977, is a scorcher and a prized collectible. Doom duels doom on the new opus from My Silent Wake and The Drowning. My Silent Wake is already well established in the UK death / doom scene, having released 3 full length albums on Bombworks Records. Over the years, the 2 bands have shared the stage on many occasions and have forged a great friendship, so the idea of sharing an album together was a no brainer.
