“Judgement of the Dead” stands out as the authentic conception of Pagan Altar's first full length album. Originally released on vinyl by Black Widow and re-released by Buried by Time and Dust “Judgement of the Dead” delivers a great mix of atmospheric and dark tones together with intricate guitar work and developing structures. In an age when music tends towards the derivative, the mechanical, the over‐produced, Black Magician cast their attention backwards, and then back some more. The result of many a long discussion in country pubs, and long rambles through the more isolated areas of the English countryside, they formed through mutual appreciation of 70s prog, eerie folklore and a good real ale.
While they confess to being just as influenced by the late 60s British folk scene as by the old guard of Heavy Metal and Doom, there’s no hippy‐drippy philosophising here. Black Magician’s ideology is firmly rooted in the sinister. The brooding landscape of Arthur Machen, the haunted countryside of M.R. James is where they reside most contentedly.
Black Magician distance themselves from the current trend for pseudo‐occult rehashed doom posturing and clichéd horror film imagery. What you can expect is something much more sincere, a genuine fascination with the darker side of British history. Monolithic cosmic‐nod‐inducing riffs, swirling Hammond organ and dark acoustic passages are the ingredients !

Classic UK crust punk band Doom kicked off their career with the album War Crimes, released by the then-independent label Peaceville. After a couple of years Peaceville sold a majority of their back catalogue, including the Doom titles, to Music for Nations. This didn't sit well with the band's ideology, so they decided to quit the label for good. Doom then later released the subtly named Fuck Peaceville CD, which contained re-recordings of most tracks from the Peaceville era.
This hefty double vinyl package contains everything Doom recorded for Peaceville - War Crimes LP, tracks from the split LP with No Security and Police Bastard 7" - all are the original recordings. The set features a reproduction of the original War Crimes gatefold jacket and a 8 page booklet with lyrics, photos and also brand new liner notes from the band. The package is housed in a slipcase with the original split LP artwork.

There are a few bands from Finland that play some sort of old school psychedelic hard rock, but none of them sing in their native language. The debut album by Seremonia (Finnish for ceremony) features fuzz-laden guitar riffage, out-of-control drum grooves, spacey synthscapes, eerily beautiful female vocals AND esoteric and apocalyptic lyrics sung in Finnish.
Seremonia's hard rocking is influenced by the muddy sounds of Anglo-American proto metal, the weirdly fuzzy grooves of Latin psychedelic rock, the experimental ideas of Finnish progressive rock and universal D.I.Y. punk rock ethics. The guitar riffs are doomy and the lyrics are dark, but Seremonia rolls on with an uplifting spirit. The band plays with uncontrollable abandon, furiously stumbling through the songs. Upon the wild fuzz jams vocalist Noora Federley delivers the lyrics in a chillingly cold blooded manner. Boring modern production standards don't seem to interest Seremonia at all. The album is a part of a great and age-old lineage of eccentric rock 'n' roll.
Although Seremonia's music is informed by the heavy rock of the past decades, it is music for these apocalyptic times. Visions of environmental catastrophes or themes of natural and supernatural evil have never been more current topics. Love for nasty guitar riffs and demented rocking are never out of fashion.

Spiders create their music and looks with the early 70’s glam and hard rock in mind. Since Spiders was formed in the early 2010 the band has had time to release records on American Kemado (The Sword, Dungen) and Valley King and Swedish De:Nihil and Crusher. Parrenin had been part of a traditional “antique folk” movement in France in the late 1960’s (she was in many ways a French equivalent to Sandy Denny or Mandy Morton); indeed, she had recorded eight albums with musicians from this scene before “Maison Rose”—her best, and last album, recorded in 1976 and released the following year. The record seems to alternate between a cosmic take on an ancient Breton sound, and delicate, multi-tracked ballads—ranging from sounds that would not be out of place on an Ash Ra Tempel album to elements of traditional French folk music (including homemade instruments) that are just as exotic. Certainly, the avant-garde edge lurking beneath the simple folkiness of “Maison Rose” puts in mind the explorations of Brigitte Fontaine with her sometime musical voyager Areski; there are also suggestions of the pastoral caranavserai aesthetic of Vashti Bunyan, as well as the multi-track sensuality of Linda Perhacs (to name two much-touted singers who seem to have a similar ability to enchant). But Parrenin has her own style, her music has its own deeply ethereal quality, and the album itself has its own magic spell to cast that renders comparison with other albums unimportant in the end. Magnificent… we say. Now, on to the presentation—the highest quality mastering and pressing (done at Acoustech Mastering/RTI in California, the same people who master and press every title that audiophile label Classic Records makes); the resulting LP is housed in a poly-lined sleeve, inside an ultra-heavy 1960's style gatefold jacket, which is housed in a loose-fitting plastic sleeve. Inside the sleeve, you will find an insert with full details on Ms. Parrenin, printed on 100% recycled paper. The LP labels are replicas of the Ballon Noir originals. All in all, the artistic trajectory of Rotomagus was peculiar: they started out as a harmony pop-psych band, shifted through a brief Jimi Hendrix-ian interlude (‘The Sky Turns Red’), straight into a Vanilla Fudge groove; they then went down in flames as a hair-raising monolithic heavy rock power trio. On Julian Cope’s excellent Head Heritage web-site, the Seth Man raves about Rotomagus thus: “The first time I heard this track (‘Fighting Cock’), I did not freak out. I merely walked into a nearby closet and screamed my head off for a minute solid, beat the floor and ripped my t-shirt... then I cowered when it hit me: this thing came out in 1971? Before “Raw Power”?! I just lost my mind... The only thing that predates this monster in terms of being a full-on amassing of all things heavy are all the many key points on Sir Lord Baltimore’s “Kingdom Come” LP and THAT’S it, brother.” French magazine Rock & Folk was succinct: “Rotomagus create an emotional music, violent, even aggressive.” Violent. Aggressive. Intense. On this disc we bring you the entire output of Rotomagus, including an album-length demo from 1971, the band’s tumultuous, thunderous swansong, recorded as a super jam (live with no overdubs).
Our Lion Productions and Martyrs of Pop edition of Rotomagus comes in a heavy duty gatefold jacket, which has the entirety of the Seth Man’s article on the band, plus the band’s history in both English and French. Hard to believe this is all pre-1971, as much of the demo is not just proto punk but proto hardcore—with enough fiery attitude to make you want to scream along. Alberto Infusino (Sandhy) and Alberto Vanasco (Mandhy) began their musical partnership in beat bands The New Free Men and La Máquina de Música. In 1969, Billy Bond, chief of La Pesada del Rock Roll and legendary major domo of Argentine rock, asked them to prepare a demo as a duo. Instead, they recorded an album (in three hours!) with a full band (Farfisa organ, congas, drums, bass, and guitars): one take of each song. They decided to press the record—only 110 LPs were made, making this album the ultimate Argentine rock rarity. Sandhy & Mandhy were among the first in South America to bring a rebellious attitude to their music—all this in a period of military repression, when forced haircuts (and brutality) in the streets were a common occurrence. The simmering, intense ‘La indeferencia los pone mal’ (Indifference Upsets Them), was an important protest song, possibly the first from South America. Every word demonstrates the strong concern that Sandhy & Mandhy felt about the repressions they experienced every day: "Like little birds, we will have to fight/against all who want to change us with stones/why do they have to be so cruel/or is that indifference upsets them/I do not know what they want, to teach us morals/they should clean first their consciences/and then we will talk." In the end, Bond said that Sandhy & Mandhy sounded too much like a band (not a duo), so success was not their fate. But now through the magic of reissues, you can check out their groovy, organ-driven melancholy psych, with Zombies-ish harmony vocals, a little touch of bossa, and other treats (that fuzz guitar on the Os Mutantes-esque 'Lluvia'!). There are artistic ambitions too, with tape edits/inserts very unusual in an album of the era. At times introspective and acoustic, at others manic and ramshackle in the best way, it's quite a discovery.

Maya Over Eyes from San Jose, CA have defined their band around one word, perseverance. Vocalist and founding member Paco Medina not only creates a unique mix of aggressive roar, heartfelt yell, and the bark of a pitbull, he’s chosen to express his heritage in this album by writing “Furia” and “Fuego” in his native Spanish. Although he is the only guitarist, Edder Lopez is able to channel his inner buzzsaw to write riffs that demand the crowd do his bidding, whether to 2-step, stagedive, or circlepit. Galloping drum beats and thumping basslines by Jason Espinoza and Ozzy Medina are a strong wind behind the sails of each song, pushing you forward and steering the listener to whatever destination they desire.

The Flenser has reissued the vinyl version of Bosse-de-Nage’s brilliant second album “ii”! ‘ii’ is Bosse-de-Nage’s follow up to minimalist black metal weirdos’ self titled debut. This album was recorded in 2010 by Justin Weis and features a HUGE sound along with the Lousiville-styled post rock (think Slint not Godspeed) and black metal weirdness that made Bosse-de-Nage’s debut a divisive genre defying classic. Black metal tinged with classical 20th century minimalism, outlandish vocals and bizzaro outsider lyrics that are both pornographic and surreal. Bosse-de-Nage is a reclusive four piece black metal entity from the San Francisco Bay Area who have an affinity for the bizarre and have kept a no zero promotion policy since the beinigng. The album was recorded by Justin Weis ( who’s recordings credits include Hammers of Misfortune and Ludicra), at Trakworx studios in the San Francisco Bay Area. Bosse-de-Nage formed in 2006, recorded two demos and released a self-recorded full length in 2010 on The Flenser. In June of 2012 Bosse-de-Nage released their third full length on Profound Lore Records.
