There are many YOB and doom metal fans alike that consider YOB’s second full-length album “Catharsis” as the band’s best album. The band have been aware of this, which in turn had them perform “Catharsis” in its entirety at the 2012 edition of the respected Roadburn Festival to much acclaim. It is considered one of the cult American doom metal albums released in the last ten years. The only issue was that “Catharsis” had been out of print for many years and was hard to come across as the initial label that released it folded and it was never re-pressed or made available. That is until now.

Ten years after its release (though “Catharsis” was recorded in 2002, much before it was first released in Nov of 2003) Profound Lore is proud to unveil the definitive re-issue of YOB’s sought after cult classic. Re-mastered from its original tape source by legendary grunge godfather Tad Doyle, making “Catharsis” sound that much more complete and monstrous than its original incarnation, along with new artwork and presentation by Aaron Edge and liner notes by YOB mastermind Mike Scheidt, this re-issue (which is just presented with the three tracks that comprise “Catharsis”) of one of the most colossal American doom metal releases of the last ten years is a reminder of how the vision of YOB culminated and began as a singular entity to what it has become today. That being YOB’s recognition as one of the most important bands in heavy music today.

Brooklyn, NY’s VAURA was formed in late 2009 by guitarist Kevin Hufnagel (also of Gorguts and Dysrhythmia fame) and vocalist/guitarist Joshua Strawn when both musicians were introduced by a mutual friend. Strawn would then Strawn give Hufnagel a demo collection of songs he had been working on in which the music was and unorthodox mixture of grandiose melodic guitars, synth textures, and hazy, distant melodic vocals. When bassist Toby Driver (Kayo Dot and Maudlin Of The Well mastermind) and drummer Charlie Schmid joined the fold, VAURA would then expand on the demo material which would then manifest as their debut album “Selenelion” which was released early 2012 on Weird Records and would gain some attention upon its release amongst notable press outlets such as Decibel, Pitchfork, Dusted, and Alarm Press. Said album would display VAURA’s impeccable sound picture by seamlessly combining such genres as progressive metal, shoegaze, post-punk and indie-rock.

With their new album “The Missing”, VAURA have taken their sound even further and build upon the foundation they laid down with “Selenelion”. By enhancing the progressive metal elements even more, along with bringing in elements that hark back to ‘80s era Rush and classic Queensryche, along with the band’s post-punk and classic ‘80s darkwave influence being more prominent, “The Missing” is the result of four unique musicians converging once again to create one of the most distinct heavy music albums of the year.

Cedric Myton aka Cedric Congos history in Reggae goes back several decades. Cedric played with Lincoln Thompson The Tartans in the early 1970’s until thay apparently fell out. Myton was one of the backing harmony vocals on Prince Lincoln’s Humanity album recorded in 1975. He then joined up with Watty Burnett and Ashanti Roy as THE CONGOS. They recorded the album "Heart Of The Congos" with Lee Perry at the controls, producing what is widely considered one of the Great classics of Reggae. Later Myton pursued a solo career.

Cedric visited Ariwa a few years ago to work on a 10 inch single (Some Are Having Fun) followed by (Strength To Strength) a 7 inch single. Both tracks paid tribute to Lee Perry by having the Upsetter sound

Germ, the solo band of Tim (Austere, Grey Waters, ex-Nazxul, ex-Woods of Desolation, etc), had always been lurking beneath the shadows of his other bands. That is until 2012, when Germ came bursting onto the scene with the debut album ‘Wish’, and follow up EP ‘Loss’. Already critics were praising the huge step forward compositionally between those two releases, and that now continues with ‘Grief’. At once another huge step forward for Germ, ‘Grief’ also takes a step back towards Tim’s Black Metal roots by placing more emphasis on guitar this time around. The UK SUBS 1997 masterpiece 'Riot' hits vinyl for the first time this November. This album was not the usual late '70's Punk band trying and failing to relive their past glories, far from it in fact ; read on...

"In honor of the U.K. SUBS' 20th anniversary, Nicky Garratt returned to the fold for Riot and Quintessentials, which were recorded simultaneously at San Francisco's Wally Sound. And he brought along 1981-1983 bassist Alvin Gibbs (from the band's two best LPs, Diminished Responsibility and Endangered Species) for the ride. Garratt and Gibbs had returned once before -- but it was a false start -- on the OK but flawed and inconsistent 1988 LP Killing Time. This time the reunited trio get it right, using Samiam drummer Dave Ayer in place of Steve Roberts. Like Quintessentials, Riot approaches the meaty, huge-sounding production of the final two Garratt/Gibbs LPs. The mix may not be quite as big on either, but Riot's "House of Cards," "Cyberjunk," and especially the title track are brimming with all the qualities that made the Subs one of the leaders of U.K. punk's second wave, along with the post-Brian James Damned, Ruts, Undertones, Angelic Upstarts, and Stiff Little Fingers. Fifteen straight songs may smack you in the face, but as in the best of all "original spark" punk, the playing level is so escalated it belies the apparent simplicity of the written chords. Garratt's right hand chops at the strings with style as well as authority, spitting fire at all the key junctures, blasting into choruses such as "Guilty Man" out of power-riffs so nasty and glorious, you understand how 10,000 punk bands in his absence never came close to matching this! And with such a formidable band to back him at last, the always-committed Harper gains stature and probity for his gutsy stands, such as when he spits "where's the human rights?" The Thanes: Lenny Helsing (vocals and guitar), Angus McPake (organ / 12-string guitar), Mike Goodwin (drums) and Mark Hunter (bass guitar and vocals) have long been ambassadors of sixties folk-punk and garage pop jangle, so it's not terribly surprising that their latest disc outing should reflect at least some of these distinct qualities.

They've chosen their own "She's Coming Back To Me", written by the group’s organist and twelve-string guitarist Angus McPake, to be the featured topside. Showing off some Blues Magoos-type moves, it’s naggingly melodic and is furnished with short jabs of fuzz across the chorus. Unexpectantly, it then veers off into a whirligig of jazz-spiked 12-string … and back again. The flip-side houses the group’s reading of "Love Is Fading Away", originally recorded by The Poets back in the autumn of 1965, but not released commercially until thirty years later. Although The Thanes’ version was recorded before the death, in August 2012, of Poets’ founder, lead singer and songwriter George Gallacher, it now serves as the group's poignant tribute to the memory of their great friend and musical compatriot – and a truly dynamic vocal presence!

These, then, are the latest waxings from The Thanes, fruits borne out of sessions undertaken in group member Angus McPake’s self-built "Ravencraig" studio complex deep in the heart of Edinburgh.

Luckily for lovers of musical mayhem, the Case got access to their school music room and a four-track recorder over a Christmas break in 1971. A rock-solid, harddriving rhythm section lays down the necessary underpinning for moody organ and beautifully-toned guitar. There is sheer joy at play here, a kind of rock 'n' roll exuberance—with ample raw talent and wicked riffing—which shines through on every cut. Once upon a time, when the music business was more music than business (but only just), there was a lean, mean, and super tight band who created a quintessential dose of New York sixties psychedelia: one perfect album, loaded with heavy swirling organ, ferocious fuzz guitar, and powerhouse vocals. That band was Odyssey. Their album, “Setting Forth,” did not take them from support slots in their native Long Island to the major label heights of other local bands like Vanilla Fudge. But it is that same Odyssey “Setting Forth” album that is one of the greatest guitar-heavy psych records in the world, and as a result one of the most sought after (and expensive) psychedelic rarities ever pressed on wax. Now it has been painstakingly remastered, repackaged for this 2xCD deluxe edition, ready for true psych fans to devour.

This is truly one of the pinnacles of underground psychedelic music, recorded in 1969, released in an edition of fewer than 100 copies, and impossible to find as it only came in a plain white cardboard sleeve; an incredible, musically accomplished, hard rocking album of originals that jumps right out of the speakers and grabs you, from it’s opening In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida-esque riffs right to the grooving end. The 24-page booklet that accompanies this two-disc set has the complete band history by Odyssey leader Vinny Kusy, as well as rare photos from his own archive. Bonus tracks on disc one are three “basement recordings” from the “Setting Forth” era. The second disc contains Odyssey “Live at Levittown Memorial Auditorium: 1974,” a live recording that was never really meant to be, recorded by Odyssey’s sound engineer on a portable cassette recorder. It is the only document of Odyssey in their progressive rock phase, just before sometime Odyssey keyboardist Tom Doncourt and band-member Fred Callan recorded their legendary Cathedral “Stained Glass Stories” album.

Michael Oosten took off towards the end of the 1960’s with a Martin guitar in tow, playing coffeehouses and clubs when he wasn’t spending three months living at 10,500 ft on the side of a mountain with his pet owl, backpacking the Rocky Mountains, the Cascades, or watching the night sky from hot springs. By the end of 1973, he was ready to record an LP—five psychedelic folk/rock tracks, ranging from the brightly smiling ‘Sunny Day’ to the epic ‘Hungry Horse Montana,’ where Oost switched seamlessly from Celtic picking to Middle Eastern chord progressions. Oosten filled out his folk/rock/psych sound with the help of a few friends: piano from Tom Hennick on ‘Hey Babe,’ vocals from Jan Reek on ‘Garden,’ and bass from Al Byla on ‘Sunny Day.’ Oosten's wayward vocals puts us in mind of other meandering faves from various eras (Incredible String Band, Perry Leopold, or the Meatpuppets, to name but three), and Oost proves himself a stellar guitarist in an eccentric and percussive mode. Columbia Records expressed interest in Oosten's music; but after a single meeting with the label, it was clear that the album would be too difficult for the mainstream honchos to market. Oost and friend Lester D'ore (editor of Chicago countercultural paper Seed and designer of the Yippie flag) holed up at D'ore's Wisconsin commune farm to silkscreen each LP jacket by hand. Sparky Simmons (Acid FM) recorded most of the guitars and Fabio Bartolini (Hate Profile) played guitars on one song. Martyr Lucifer delivered his best vocals' performance to date. Bless (Hortus Animae) recorded some wonderful piano. Cyndee Lee Rule provided a violin string section and Dr. James Hodkinson (Shadowlight, Pre-Med) played mellotron and moog. The legendary Nik Turner (Hawkwind's cofounder, Space Ritual, etc.) once more recorded sax and flute. Everything was done under the coordination of keyboardist Alisa Coral, the creator of Space Mirrors. Artwork and 12-page booklet were again created by Kevin Sommers. Space Mirrors again confirmed its international status by having in its ranks musicians from Italy, USA, UK and Russia!

In 1983 Drafi Deutscher, one of the biggest German pop stars ever, sat in the auditorium and was enthusiastic about the Pee Wee Bluesgang’s performance. Spontaneously Drafi offered the band to produce their next studio album, and in the summer of 1983 they all came together in the Tennessee studio in Hamburg to record this album. Unfortunately for the band just in that time Drafi’s comeback with "Guardian Angel" happened , which took him back into the charts. The recordings of the band proceeded haltingly, and Drafi’s efforts, to find a label for the album, fizzled. The Pee Wee Bluesgang decided to departe for concerts and went into another studio fo another record.. The "Lost Album" with Drafi disappeared in the archive and then eventually completely. It is due to Pee Wee‐singer Richard Hagel that a cassette copy was obtained from the recordings. This 30‐year‐old band was completely overhauled and restored by the mastering engineer Hans Detholf. We are happy to present this “Lost Album” after such a long time to the public. Three of the songs are performed by Drafi Deutscher himself, the album offers a wonderful mix of R & B, blues and rock. Just Playing funky. Once again a time document that remains preserved for posterity.

All songs where written very close prior to their entry in the studio, this gives the album a reductive and honest feeling, as opposed to the usual overkill productions of our time. The album production has stripped the sound of their debut single "Until the morning light" and is instead developing a bit more peculiar sound which contributes to the establishing of their musical identity.
